    Try WordWeb. The basic version is free, the larger Pro version is US$ 29.

    Re: Dictionary in Word (Word XP)

    I downloaded the WordWeb free program and it seemed to load okay.
    When I tried it out on a Word document I received an error message as follows:

    wweb32
    Access violation at address 40074E51 in module 'wweb32.dll'. Read of address. Then a OK button.

    All functions froze except I was able to move around the mouse which was the hourglass.
    When I ran Task Manager the wweb32 was "running" and did close when I selected to End Task.

    It bugs me when these things happen.
    Any suggestions?

    No idea, I don't use WordWeb myself. You might e-mail the developer - the e-mail address is in the Contact section of the website.

    You could create a simple Macro like this and then add it to the relevant right click menus (Tools > Customize > Toolbars > Short Cut Menus, then drag the macro to the most important places)

    Edited by StuartR to add
    Gosh, that's actually quite useful. I just added this to all of the short cut menus that have Lookup as an option and I think I shall be using it a lot!! Thank you.

    <code>
    Sub CheckDictionary()

    Const strStem As String = "http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/"

    If Selection.Words.Count = 1 Then
    ActiveDocument.FollowHyperlink Address:=strStem & Selection.Words(1).Text, NewWindow:=True
    End If

    End Sub
    </code>

    Re: Dictionary in Word (Word XP)

    Thanks Hans and StuartR.
    I think I will just pull the program I loaded since it seem to have a problem. <img src=/S/drop.gif border=0 alt=drop width=23 height=23>

    I added the macro as suggested and finally got it to work. Took a little fiddling to get it onto the right click menu.
    Now I just highlight the word, right mouse click and select Dictionary.
    It opens Dictionary.com and has the selected word already inserted and defined.

    Works like a CHARM. <img src=/S/clapping.gif border=0 alt=clapping width=19 height=23>

    You don't need to highlight the word, just right click anywhere in the word.

    Works as you said - This is a VERY nice feature and I will us it often.

    Is this macro adaptable to Excel and/or PowerPoint programs?
    Might as well add it to them if possible.

    Thank you again for your fantastic solution.

    I suspect that something similar might be possible in Excel and PPT, but I don't know how to do it offhand, and don't have the time to experiment right now.

    Why not post a question in the VBA forum, with a pointer to this thread?

    Re: Dictionary in Word (Word XP)

    Stuart this is a great little bit of code. Changed url to go to thesaurus.reference.com as well. Very handy.

    Have tried to modify to go to a French translation site at wordreference.com. Just changed dictionary.reference.com to wordreference.com.

    However when I attempt to run I get an error and when I run de###### the following is highlighted. " ActiveDocument.FollowHyperlink Address:=strStem & Selection.Words(1).Text, NewWindow:=True"

    What changes would need to be made to the line in order to have it run to the translation site?

    Thanks.

    Can you post a copy of the exact code you are trying to run, so that I can check it.
