What ICONs are you getting for what files types that appear to be in error?

System Icons in Explorer (XP SP2 IE 7)

While looking through Windows Explorer, I noticed some Icons were wrong or acting erratic?
I tried using Tweak UI to rebuild the Icons but that didn't seem to make any difference. The default icon for a folder , for instance, would be the stock yellow file folder, other times it would be some other kind of icon.

Since rebuilding the Icon cache didn't help, I went into the registry to: HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorer Shell Icons and found the entry had item numbers but no value? ( see screenshot of the first few )
I tried to manually add a value at number 3 ( closed folder ) and pointed it to a .ICO file. The value seemed to stick but it did not change the closed folder view icon.
I used "ActivIcons" program to try the change and rebuild the cache but still a blank or no change effected in the reg entry.

Short of doing a Repair reinstall of XP, any ideas out there?

The easiest ones to see are the closed folder view ( # 3 ) and the open folder view ( # 4 )
Some times they are correct, other times some other apparently random icon.

Can you tell what some of these ICONs are, this may tell us what program is grabbing the folders. I gather that the file assocation has not been change?

Hard to tell just what they ARE but it looks like they are the stock icons out of the system32shell 32.dll.
Again it's an erratic thing. One is:

The other question is WHY is the shellIcon entry BLANK?

Assuming you want the Windows defaults for all those icons, I think you should simply delete all those entries from HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorer Shell Icons. After a new WinXP install, I believe that Registry key is empty except for a single (Default) entry -- for which the data is "(value not set)". On my PC, the only other entry is 29 (for which the data is "C:WINDOWSsystem32TweakUI.exe,2"), and that one came from changing the shortcut arrow overlay using TweakUI.

On my Windows XP SP2 installation I have never played with any of this stuff. I don't even have the Shell Icon folder under
HKLMSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorer .

Like <!profile=StuartR>StuartR<!/profile>, the entire key is not even there. You could could consider backing it up into a Reg Patch & then deleting it. HTH

St3333ve, Stuart and Unkamunka,

I guess it is worth a try to export the existing key as a backup and delete the entire key. Maybe this is only used when there are exceptions to the default icons that come with XP.
It's the best idea thus far and I'll give it shot and report back.

Update to the update.
I ended up deleting the Shell Icon key in the reg but sorry to say there appears to be no difference, one way or the other. It's like that key "performed no useful function", or PNUF as EEs know it.

After deleting the reg key, did you rebuild the icon cache? (I use TweakUI-->Repair for this.)

Re: System Icons in Explorer (XP SP2 IE 7)

Yes, I did do a rebuild.
It blew all of my desktop icons all over the left side of the screen but that's the only effect that I could see.
