This message was converted to plain text. (MSO 2003)

    Edited:

In the ToolsOptionsEmail Options, the "Read all standard mail in plain text" is NOT selected.

    CB
    *******************************

I've never seen this happen before with 'my' e-mail...

HTML formatted mail is coming in and being changed to plain text... With a bar at the top that I can click to convert same to HTML...

Where did this setting come from? Is there a way to "disarm" it?

    Regards,
    Chuck Billow

What did you add, change or delete? Running with Exchange server? Was the option selected and you just cleared it? Have you re-booted since it started happening?

This feature was installed with Office XP2. See:

Are these messages in your Junk Email box?

    John/Joe:

I **think** it may have been the "Don't turn on link in messages..." Found in the Junk mail settings...

I hadn't added or changed anything (that I know of) that was different from my "usual"... Except for maybe that one setting...

    We'll see...

    Thanks guys.

Re: This message was converted to plain text. (MSO 2003)

I know that there's a way to fix this, Chuck, as my personal laptop, which is configured to be Microsoft compliant (I mosttly do whatever MS says an individual user should), doesn't have that problem. Or maybe my double layers of spam filters (I use a remailer intermediary) kill all the phishing emails. But I'm buried in a major work project and have not found it.

I recommend you search Slipstick, the Microsoft groups, and then Google the problem, in that order, since that's what I would do. Post back the solution if you find it.

Re: This message was converted to plain text. (MSO 2003)

I found (on Google -- yea, guys, *I* looked on Google -- that this is part of the anti-phishing that Microsoft built into SP-2... Foolish, silly me... I should have KNOWN it had a purpose!

What I couldn't find was any way to disable same. BUT, I did find comments that SP-2 isn't much of anything without and except for the anti-phishing inserts.

    So:

Do you really need SP-2? And, if not, is there a "safe" way to uninstall it?

    Also found with Google ( <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>)...

Okay Mister Smarty Pants... But do I NEED Sp-2 since I don't agree with their phishing criteria more often than not?

    Leif:

Is that also the case with 2007? That you can't "adjust" an install, but rather have to uninstall and re-do the entire thing?

To be honest, I don't know - this is probably a matter of personal preference (or bravery!)
This MS page suggests that "To enable phishing protection, you need both Office 2003 SP2 and the latest Outlook 2003 Junk E-mail Filter Update. Once both are installed, Office 2003 SP2 has phishing protection turned on by default." - perhaps the Junk E-mail Filter Update (KB923095) is an element that can be uninstalled or disabled separately...?

As regards uninstalling service packs for other MSO versions, I have no definitive answer either:

The following comment about 'the only items' applies if you do NOT have 'read all e-mail as plain text' set. The only items that get automatically converted to plain text are those that are identified as spam and put into your junk e-mail folder. If you right click the item and select Junk E-mail | Mark as not Junk the item is moved back to the Inbox and reconverted to its original form.
