    Sharing a Printer (Vista HP)

I have a new HP laptop with Vista HP edition. I have it connected to my wireless home network. I would like to be able to have the lap top share the printer that is connected to my desktop; the desk top is using Windows XP. What is the procedure for turning on Print Sharing when using XP on one computer and Vista Home Premium on another?

Re: Sharing a Printer (Vista HP)

The "File and Printer Sharing" is the same for both systems. However, the caveat comes when trying to share the printer itself. The issue is DRIVERS.... you will have to find, if available, Vista-compatible drivers for the Vista machine to be able to use the printer connected to the XP machine. So, head on over to the website for the brand of printer you own and hope that updated drivers have been issued for Vista. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

You will find that if you share the printer on the XP machine, then on the Vista machine, open My Networks, scroll down to the printer on the XP machine and the right click it, and select install. It will use the drivers from the XP machine and send the print files to to the XP machine.

I have done this all through the Beta on both a HP 2100 Lazerjet and a HP Deskjet 1220C.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Thanks for that additional bit of information. I was not aware that what you suggested would work since in the past, if you shared a printer, you usually had to install drivers for the client machine, either when you shared the printer (option to provide drivers for the client) or install the drivers themselves on the client. Since Vista needs compatible drivers I assumed, evidently wrongly, that Vista-compatible drivers were needed.

That's one of the big improvements in Vista over previous O/S that it provides an incredible assortment of drivers for hardware, albeit truncated in most cases, which allow functionality for peripherals upon installation. Of course, it is always better to download and install the full updated version drivers when available from the manufacturer. What many don't realize is that the included drivers are NOT created by Microsoft but supplied TO Microsoft from the hardware/software manufacturers themselves. All too often I have read the tirades of frustrated users that the drivers provided my Microsoft are bad and thus blame Microsoft instead of the company that supplied them..... but this is off-topic, hehe.
