    Can't close a PST (2003 SP2)

Curious problem. In my folders list, I have a PST open. If I try and close it though, it comes back with the error message "The operation failed. An object cannot be found". I can still see all the messages in it, and I can interact with it as normal - but I can't close it.

I've tried renaming the PST and starting Outlook again. No go - Outlook actually manages to remember the file and the messages in it!

I took a copy of all the messages as a precaution and put them in a new PST. I then renamed the original PST and gave the new PST the same filename as the original so that Outlook would open it up in preference. It does, and I can see the additional folder that I have in the new PST - but I still can't close it, and still get the same error message.

Yesterday I rebuilt my PC from scratch (unrelated, honest!) and reinstalled Outlook. Unfortunately, I had used the Save Settings Wizard so that I didn't have to re-enter all the email accounts etc - and the problem has transferred across to the new install. Aargh!

    Any thoughts, anyone?

    Cheers,

    Stuart

The problem is probably in your mail profile. Try creating a new profile in the Mail control panel.

That will mean re-creating everything, right? Re-entering all the email accounts, re-entering all the rules, adding all the signatures, changing all the settings? <img src=/S/frown.gif border=0 alt=frown width=15 height=15>

Will it also mean reconfiguring the toolbars, or is that profile-independent?

    Cheers,

You can export and import rules:
    - Select Tools | Rules and Alerts...
    - Click Options in the dialog that appears.

Signatures, toolbar customizations, macros and custom categories are not profile-dependent.

Not so bad then. I'll give it a go and see what happens.

    Thanks.
