Dell - how to make money on a new PC

While configuring a couple of new Dell Optiplexes today I came upon a new (to me) feature, where you get charged for removing software options, and setting the BIOS to boot from the hard drive.

You can ask Dell to partition the hard drive into two partitions rather than the usual one (

Wow!! They'll try anything to get incremental revenue. Wonder how many suckers will spend their hard earned money on those?

Yes, if I wanted to! And I will set up the partitions myself with an appropriate program!

I'd never heard the term "incremental revenue" Joe used before. What a nice, politically correct term for theft by deception.

Re: Dell - how to make money on a new PC

This thread has really piqued my curiosity, John, as I've been to the Dell ordering pages many times, including the ordering process last year for both my son's and my Dell desktops. I've no memory of seeing charges for NOT buying something and I hope it's not a Dell-U.K. thing. I'm gonna have to go and "pretend" I want to buy something from them here in the USA to see if this kind of thing happens here as well.

I checked the Dutch Dell website and went through the entire process of selecting a PC, stopping at actually ordering it. There were no options to remove or omit features for an extra charge.

And I just did the same thing here in the USA, Hans, with the same result - NO added prices for NOT buying something. John, can you catch a screenshot of exactly where in the ordering process you saw the screens you posted? I went through a LONG session of customizing a purchase and didn't see ANY screens that had to do with Systems Management or First Boot Device. Something is rotten in Denmark (or U.K., as the case may be).

Some time ago in the consumer electronics field the UK was commonly known as Treasure Island, because companies could get away with charging over-inflated prices for (virtually) the same equipment as in the US, for example. Quite often we had to pay the same number of

You might have to go in through the Enterprise/Large Business doorway to be given these choices. Very few small businesses and no home users are going to pay someone to remove Outlook Express for them.

No, the route in was via Small Business!

The only time you don't get offered Optiplexes is if you go in via Desktops and select Home, rather than one of the Business options lower-down in the menu.

PS I'm assuming that my link produces "Choose a Country/Region: United Kingdom" at the bottom when you click on it.

If you are churning out thousands of identical items, doing something non-standard can and does cost more. In general, package holidays are cheaper than booking flights and hotels separately; set meals are cheaper than
