Should I Upgrade to Vista? (Windows XP Pro SP2)

I am running Windows XP SP2 on a Dell computer I bought in Sept. 2006, which is running great!! At this time, I have absolutely no problems. Does anyone recommend upgrading to Vista, just to have the newest OS? I would hate to cause problems with a computer that works fine. Also, I am afraid that my data would get corrupted.
Can I get different opinions here? Thanks.

You have a computer that is 6 months old. Unless you have some compelling reason to upgrade (and just having the latest OS is not a compelling reason) I would leave well enough alone.

Upgrading to Vista will likely cause hardware issues (you really need 2 GB of RAM for Vista to get all the bells and whistles you are paying for) as well as software incompatibility problems. Enjoy your new machine for a few years before you consider upgrading to Vista and a new machine. My . I agree with DocWatson. If your PC is running fine now, I'd stay with Windows XP for the tine being. Windows XP SP2 is stable and is well supported. The kinks are still being ironed out of Windows Vista, andlots of software still has to be adapted for it. I'd wait at least until Vista SP1 is released.

I agree with Doc and Hans, there is NO "MUST HAVE" in Vista unless you acquire software or hardware that will need Vista. If You do decide to go to Vista, contact you machine's OEM (Dell) for you copy of Vista, as it will contain the needed drivers for your machine and any software that the OEM thinks you need. I have found that it MAY even be cheaper to get it from the OEM.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

I would think it should be cheaper Dave. They'd be selling you an OEM version.

Well, I guess I'll be the one to disagree somewhat with the other loungers who've already replied. While there is not necessarily the one killer application to make people want to migrate to Vista ASAP, there are many 'under the hood' enhancements that can be pretty compelling when you look at the OS as a whole. Given the following: all the software you want is Vista compatible and you've got Vista drivers for all your hardware. If you have a PC that will only run Home Basic forget it. Otherwise, I'd say check out Vista particularly if you've got a PC that will run either Home Premium or Ultimate. Go to a store and play for as long as they'll let you. IMO, Vista has several significant advantages over XP.

1.) IE 7 is builtin not an addon. It is likely to be more stable. It seems to render more quickly than IE7 on XP. By default, it uses the more advanced security features of Vista.
2.) Desktop search is part of the OS not an addon. It is definitely faster and less intrusive than the version for XP.
3.) By default, Vista is more configured to be more secure than XP. It is much easier to run as a regular user than with XP.
4.) If you run a premium version, the user interface is so much nicer. You can do some really cool stuff with the AERO interface.
5.) There are several builtin nice ways of grouping your files, photos, videos, etc. Almost all the builtin utilities to do anything in Vista have been significantly updated.

There's lots of other enhancements that you can find out about if you search around the internet. All that being said, every OS has its warts and Vista is no exception. There will be problems found as more & more people use it. Let me reiterate, make sure all your software & hardware will run on Vista before trying to update.

Thanks everyone; I appreciate all the opinions here.
I think I decided at this time, to leave things alone for awhile.
I'll go with the old saying "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".
Thanks again for taking the time.

At the Vista launch event I attended, the presenter had 4 Gb! of RAM. This enabled him to run Vista natively as well as XP via a virtual PC, on his laptop. I'm saving up for my next CPU...
