audio editor

I've just a cut a short promo film using Windows Movie Maker (.wmv files) and am pleased with the results, except the audio editing is rather limited; you can't edit sound separately from vision, and I need to add sound effects, mix with music and synch etc. Can anybody recommend a good free audio editor that will integrate with Movie Maker? Ie so that I can copy clips across from one programme to the other, edit the sound, and copy back as a completed sound track? Or is there a better way to solve the problem?

I do not know if it will integrate but a very good free audio editor is "Audacity" found at http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
