More CD/DVD Burning Info

Not wanting to beat a dead horse and over-extend the topic, I didn't add this post to <post:=637,764>post 637,764</post:> about the topic of a replacement for Nero. However that thread has led me to two pieces of software, partly because of something from Alan Miller of several months ago in <post:=610,217>post 610,217</post:>.

I am presently in possession of and trying two pieces of software, one free and one not-so-free, both recommended either by Alan or someone else in his older thread. I have installed on my system CDBurnerXP Pro - free burning solution as well as Ashamp oo

CDBurner XP/Pro hasn't been updated in maybe 2 years. It still works and I keep it around but if something doesn't work, I don't think there will be any quick fixes (if any at all).

With AShampoo, I just got tired of their constant email bombarding. They don't know when enough is enough.

    Al,

I might have been one who recommended looking at AShampoo. But not having used it extensively, actually hardly at all, I was wondering if there is a "switch/option" for "multi-session" burns within the program when burning discs? Nero has that option and it is a very useful one.

    Inquiring minds wanna know.

That is a definite problem with AShampoo and it's associated products. I bought the CD burn program and also use a free program but the constant "updates" messages made me put them on my Spam blacklist.

I just unsubscribed and I haven't heard from them since...

Oh, and it does seem to handle multisession discs, but I've not done a lot of those, so I don't know how well it works.

Okay..... but the last time I went through a mock burn, I didn't notice the option to enable/disable "multi-session". Can you tell me where in the sequence it appears? or is it a global option that is located elsewhere than in the burning procedure?

    Re: More CD/DVD Burning Info

You and Alan Miller both mentioned it and I got my first FREE copy based on a link from Alan. I don't know about the multisession trick, Jeff. You'll have to see what others say. As I've said, my use is so occasional that so far the only discs I've burned have been with the other, freebie software that is so seldom updated that that's a concern for some... Even in all these years I've had Nero, I guess I've never had a need for a multisession burn, so I always close the disc when I burn one.

So far (not quite a month) I've had only the one email from AShampoo, so I can't join in that complaint! I get a of a lot more emails from other folks I've done business with, so I just dump 'em in MailWasher and don't even bother reading, most of the time. I don't want to cause trouble here in The Lounge, so I won't mention the names of some of the highly respected companies who flood inboxes with "junk" email.

OK, just noticed that I'm using Ashampoo Burning Studio 2007 (from a coverdisk I think). On the first screen, in the "What would you like to do?" box, clicking on burn files and folders gives a fly-out with update existing disk options

Thanks for the added information. Ya know, I most likely looked right at that and it didn't register. However, that brings up another question and that is whether or not a burned data disc, e.g., is automatically burned as multi-session, else you could not add data to the disc at a later time. And secondly, assuming that all burning sessions like that are automatically set as multi-session, how would one "close/finalize" the disc?

Ah, there's a "change options" button available once a valid disc is in the drive

    Re: More CD/DVD Burning Info

Thanks once again for the pertinent information.

FYI, just in the outside possibility you didn't know.... to use the multi-session feature correctly, you MUST insert the media (DVD/CD) into the burner FIRST and then start the program, e.g., Nero or AShampoo to burn additional files to the disc. If you start the program first and then insert the disc, all previously added files will be inaccessible after adding new files to the disc. I am assuming that this procedure applies to AShampoo as it does to Nero. I made the mistake of starting Nero first and then inserting the disc once and didn't realize until afterward that I had lost everything prior to the new burning session on the disc.

    Well that explains a lot...
