    ASP home page (FP2000)

    Is it possible to have index.asp as the home page in a FrontPage web? I have asp pages enabled. I have tried default.asp too and neither seems to be picked up as the default. What am I missing please?

    You have to configure the web server to recognize the name index.asp as the default page.
    What kind of web server are you using?

    Re: ASP home page (FP2000)

    For various reasons I won't go into now, I wanted a different 'home page' to either default.htm or index.htm.
    To get round this, I created a simple 'default.htm' and added in the header
    <pre><SCRIPT LANGUAGE="JavaScript">
    window.location.replace ("http://www.mysite.com/the_first_page_I_want.htm");
    </script>
    </pre>

    (I also added a manual hyperlink to cover the inevitable.)

    Re: ASP home page (FP2000)

    Catherine,
    Unfortunately, I am in a large organization. All I know is it is a Windows NT server with IIS. I am developing a new home page in a development subweb, eventually to go live on our Intranet. Getting someone to change the server to recognize index.asp would be great, but then the live version currently using index.htm would stop working. Anyway, Leif's suggestion worked so I think I am set! Thank you all.

    Glad it works for you.
    For what it's worth, one of the reasons I went down this path was that it was a simple non-frame page into which I could concentrate putting all the META tags (keyword, description) etc. just the once, and never have to worry about it again (in theory <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15> ) !

    If you were designing for the Internet rather than for an Intranet, you'd need to use this method of having a *.htm/*.html page, as a doorway page into your site for search engine searches.

    On this doorway page you would add all your meta tags, to ensure that search engines could find your site, Search Engines in general can't/don't or wont index .asp pages.

    BEWARE although I found this method very useful I found that many Search Engines can't index pages that they are diverted from too quickly, you may need to make the users click from the doorway page to continue.
