    link with word secondary merge file (XP SR3)

    I'm trying to improve and streamline my links between Word and a bibliography database that I have in Access.

    In the present version, I have a routine which, among other things, opens a secondary merge file called book standard.doc with the following line

    Set oDoc = oWd.Documents.Open(Filename:="Y:Bibliography FilesBook Standard.doc")

    I want to replace this with

    Set oDoc = oWd.Documents.Open(Filename:="Y:Bibliography FilesSingle Reference Standard.doc")

    opening a more complex file which copes with the fact that articles in journals, books, and articles in books all have slightly different conventions.

    But even when this is the only detail in the procedure that I change, I'm told that I'm committing run-time error 424.

    Can anyone make sense of this? I attach a Word file with the two routines, and also the two merge files.

    thanks in advance

    Does the error persist after rebooting your PC?

    I'm afraid it does. Am I just overegging the pudding?

    Error 424 is "Object required". This would seem to indicate that the Word application object hasn't been initialized properly, but I have no idea why. We'd need to see the database and the documents, but that is probably not feasible.

    I've discovered what the problem is. Single Reference Standard.doc had an AutoNew macro that involved closing the document down--if I take that command out, it works fine.

    many thanks anyway
