Unable to uninstall norton goback (Windows XP Home sp2)

My pc suddenly started trying to boot then after about 15 seconds into the load it shut down & restarted then continued to loop endlessly. I switched off and tried again without success. No problem I thought as I shall just press the spacebar and use Norton Goback. Big mistake. After trying to Goback to an earlier date the pc still looped. I then tried to go into safe mode but Norton Goback had a mind of its own. Managed to get the pc up and running and disabled the Goback. Then tried to use my Acronis to restore my saved good settings but AH!! the files were corrupt and would not load, even though I always check after backup that they are okay. Probably because i was using the Goback although I do not know caused the problems. I then tried to uninstall the Norton Goback but it would only part uninstall and I am at a loss what to do now. I have not switched my pc off for the last week in case I am unable to get it up and running again. It is stable with the Norton Goback disabled but I would like it off the machine altogether. Even with it disabled it sometimes kicks in when I right click on unrelated programs. It is very difficult to even get the pc to boot into safe mode when it goes into a loop with Norton Goback in control, that is the reason I have not shut or restarted the pc. I am contemplating formating the drive while I have it running but this is my last resort. Any help really appreciated.

The first thing I would do is to backup manually all your critical data to CD's or other external or removable media. Then get your favorites, address book and other settings information backed up manually and once that's done attempt to resuscitate your PC for the grasp of Norton.

I'll see if I can find a Norton removal tool for GoBack and post back.

Depending on the version of GoBack you have, you might find a removal tool here. HTH

Thanks doc,
I am in the process of backing up all my document files and any settings that I have to another hard drive. Will take the plunge after doing this. Cheers

Post back and let us know how you make out. Good or bad. It will help us to know if the tools work as advertised and if things go bad, we can try to help you get back up and running again.

Good Luck !!!

Re: Unable to uninstall norton goback (Windows XP

hi again Doc
Still not taken the plunge yet as I have decided to wait until I am 100% sure all my settings and files are backed up. Also going to pick up another pc to load everything onto. The Norton Goback is still trying to take control even though I have partially managed to uninstall it does not seem to take notice. I have been keeping my pc running 24/7 as I am not confident that my pc shall restart. I have not tried to install the latest Windows XP patches in case they require a restart. Shall keep you posted about the removal tool.
Thanks again for your help

Did you use the Norton Tool or did you try to remove it via Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel ??

Re: Unable to uninstall norton goback (Windows XP

I've had to use the Norton Removal Tool (which I got from the Symantec website) twice in the last month or so (yes, on two PCs!) to remove Norton Internet Security 2006 when someone has tried to install NIS 2007 on top of it. It worked for me when the uninstaller didn't. Hopefully GoBack falls within their removal criteria.

Re: Unable to uninstall norton goback (Windows XP

I did try using the Control panel / add remove programs but it did not work, in fact Norton Goback has actually reappeared here again when initially it had gone. I have not used the un-installer tools that Doc & John suggested yet as I am guessing that it will mean a restart, which I do not want to do at the moment.

Bob

Taking stuff out of the registry 'run' keys almost always requires a reboot because the aim is NOT to load next time round whatever program is being removed, and was loaded this time round...

Sooner or later, you're going to have to reboot the computer, and IMHO it would be preferrable for you to be in control of the reboot and to have removed GoBack before you have to reboot (or power outage does it for you). I would step up and use the tool to remove GoBack. I understand your reluctance, but you have more to lose if you don't remove it before any other issues come up.

Re: Unable to uninstall norton goback (Windows XP

Hi guys,
Went to the Symantec website for the un-installer which claimed to remove all its programs including Norton Goback. I downloaded and ran the program. To complete it asked for a reboot and here is what happened. The Norton Goback bar came up at start of boot sequence and then after windows load screen there was the blue screen with the message " Autochk program not found, skipping Autocheck" and the pc proceeded to restart and loop. I tried pressing "any key" when the Norton Goback appeared again but there was no response with a menu. it still continued to loop. I then went into bios as the pc restarted and found the ps2/key had been disabled, so I enabled, rebooted from windows disk and then when I pressed "any key" when the Norton Goback screen came up I was able to disable from its menu this time and the pc started ok this time. Looked in Control Panel/add remove programs and Norton had gone from here but it still has some control. Any further suggestions welcomed?

Re: Unable to uninstall norton goback (Windows XP

Create a Restore Point (Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore and select "Create a restore point").

Then open Registry Editor (click Start > Run, type REGEDIT and hit Enter), make sure that on the left pane "My Computer" - the top key - is selected, and from Edit menu choose Find (or click Ctrl - F). Search Registry for Norton. Delete the key where word "Norton" appears. Click F3 (find next), and delete the next key, etc, until the end. Then repeat the search for the word Symantec. After you finish, reboot your computer.

If you will have any problems with Windows bootup, boot to Safe Mode (press F8 immediately after BIOS splash screen closes) and restore your Restore Point (go to System Restore and choose "Restore my computer to an earlier time").

Good luck!

Re: Unable to uninstall norton goback (Windows XP

Thanks for that. There was an awful lot of Norton & Symantec files which I deleted with the exception of one which I was not too sure about as it was a shared file - see attachment. Shall I delete this one? I am going to try a reboot and hopefully this will have cleared Goback once and for all. Perhaps I'll wait until Friday the 13th is over. ps The G: drive is my system drive.

Re: Unable to uninstall norton goback (Windows XP

Thanks everyone. Looks like the Norton Goback is now gone. The pc rebooted fine and the only thing left relating to Symantec is the shared file I mentioned in my last post which I was not too sure if deleting this would affect any other programs. Just as well that I did not wait any longer, as the Doc advised, because our residential area had a power cut today!!!! Sorry Big Al but I did not notice the graphic attachment was too wide.
Keep up the good work, it is much appreciated..
