    TOC with Chapter numbers (2003)

We need to produce a TOC for a book. The publisher requires each chapter to have a heading at the top saying "Chapter x" in a style called Chapter Number, followed by a heading with the chapter title in a style called "Chapter Title". We need the TOC to look like this

Chapter 1 Introduction to the subject 1
    Chapter 2 Getting Started 19

    (and so on)

    - that is it states the chapter number, followed by the chapter title, followed by the page number.

Can we automate that with the TOC feature picking up the Chapter numbers and titles from these styles?

This is contrary to the way the TOC in Word works. You can't have Word generate it automatically, as far as I can tell.

One option would be to generate a TOC based on the Chapter Number style, and to add the chapter titles manually or through a macro.
Another option would be to create the entire TOC through a macro.

The publisher no doubt knows how Word works. It would be much easier to use the Heading 1 style. This is intended for such use, and there is a built-in outline numbering scheme for chapters that uses Heading 1. Why do they ignore it and make it unnecessarily difficult for users?

    Why indeed?

There are only seven chapters so I think I will type in the chapter number and name manually, and get the page numbers by cross references to bookmarks at the start of each chapter.

    Thanks.

Re: TOC with Chapter numbers (2003)

I'd like to pursue this further. To recap-

What I want to see in the Table of Contents looks like this

Chapter 1 Introduction to the subject-------1
    Chapter 2 Getting started-----------------------12

What I have in the document is at the head of each chapter

    Chapter 1

    Introduction to the subject

and so on. In other words, at the top of each chapter there is a line stating the chapter number (in a style called chapter number, but we could change that). The following paragraph on the line below states the chapter title (in a style called chapter title, but we could also change that). The Table of Contents has to show, all in one line, the word "Chapter" then the chapter number, then the chapter title then the page number. Also it needs to be able to pick up a few things that are not "Chapters" such as Introduction or Preface. Can I do that automatically? How do I pick up the chapter number (if there is one) from one para, and the chapter title from another and get them to display in one line in the TOC (without cheating by manually typing the necessary and just cross-referencing to bookmarks to find the page numbers).

What you want is not a TOC, at least not in the Microsoft Word sense. As I mentioned in my previous reply, you might write a macro that crates this pseudo-TOC. But - as far as I know, of course - there is no way to make the built-in TOC do what you want. If someone else knows how to bend the built-in TOC to your will, I'd be delighted to hear it.

Strange, when you consider that quite a lot of books must be set out that way at the top of their chapters.
