windows update thinks I'm using Mac OS (IE5.5 on Win98)

The subject says it all, Windows update has suddenly decided I'm using a Mac OS and points me to pages fro the Mac.

I know this home PC is waaaaaaay past its sell by date but I'm definitely using IE 5.5 on Win 98.

I've already tried re-installing IE 5.5, any other suggestions?

    stuck

Apparently it is a bug at the MS end (couple of forums mention it) Here is a response from one:
    <hr>
Open Internet Options in the Control Panel.
Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Cookies button
Click the Delete Files button, put a check next to ' Delete offline
    content ', click OK.
The system *should* now be able to access Windows Update.
You may have to do the above every time the system accesses WU until MS
    resolves this issue.

Thanks for the pointer Jerry but no change - yet - via that route. I'll try hacking the actual folders via Explorer but it will be at least Monday evening before I can report back.

Thanks again but that link requires Windows Genuine Validation and although I do have a genuine legal copy of Win 98, this PC is is in such a mess it's not worth the time to pursue this any further.

On to Plan B! Find a local who has a broadband connection and get them to download all of the Win 98 updates ever released and burn them to a CD so I can then hose this box down and do a full clean re-install from my Win 98 CD and then fully patch it.

Maybe this link http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/d.../corporate.asp will soften the blow of the downloads

A teddy bear with a chain saw and a heart. Please don't be sad about my home PC. It has served me well since I built it in late 98 but now it's just getting near retirement time. And anyway, the poor thing hasn't had a clean re-install since about 2000 so it's well over due for some TLC.

My boys are actually pleased about this latest set back - they see it as a step near computing in the 21st Century rather than with "that dinosaur".

Just to let you know Windows Update is talking to the old lady again. From what I've read via Google this is to be expected - one time you try you it thinks you're using Mac OS then another time no problem.

I will add though that I used the 'repair temp internet folder' option within TWEAKUI just before I tried again and suceeded. Whether or not that's connected I don't know but it might be, given the suggestions to clear out cookies and the TIF etc..
