Programs still running (Windows XP home sp2)

Double trouble with programs running:-
1) I closed my mailwasher pro software at the icon on the lower toolbar to do some backups and when I restarted the program no icon appeared although I started it running. I clicked the program to run again and I received a message that it was running. I checked using windows task manager (see screenshot) and there was no sign of it running in applications, although it was showing in processes (99). I thought I could reinstall but again I received a message that I should close the running application, but how?
2) I also wanted to back up my Outlook using Eazy backup software but it could not do this as it again required Outlook not to be running, but my Outlook was closed. I did leave it for a while as I know Outlook can still be running in the background until it completes its tasks. Again I checked in applications running but again it only showed up in processes.

I do NOT wish to shut down and restart my pc as I am awaiting a new one quite soon and because this one is giving me problems booting-up I am keeping it switched on until I transfer all my data over to the new one.

Can anyone advise if it is safe to end the process for both Mailwasher Pro & Outlook in the Windows task manager ( I receive a warning message when I click on end process) or is there any problems I would encounter. I appreciate that before some changes become effective then the pc must be restarted. I want to avoid this.

Thanks for any help.

Re: Programs still running (Windows XP home sp2)

Frst try this:
- Start any other Office application (for example Word or Excel).
- Press Alt+F11 to activate the Visual Basic Editor.
- Press Ctrl+G to activate the Immediate window.
- Type

getobject("outlook.application").visible = true

- Press Enter.

If Outlook becomes visible, try to close it normally.

If that doesn't work, I'd just end MailWasher and Outlook in the Task Manager. Windows XP is pretty good at handling this, but you may have problems starting Outlook again. That's the risk you take by not wanting to restart your PC...

Oops, sorry. It should have been

getobject(, "outlook.application").quit

That's what you get if you don't check first
I forgot the comma - it's obligatory. And Outlook doesn't have a Visible property. This version will try to quit Outlook. You may still get an error though, if Outlook doesn't run any more or if it cannot be activated for any reason.

No problem but still getting a "run-time error 429. Activex component can't create object" with your latest string. Also my pc has now slowed to a crawl.
Cheers Bob.

Error 429 means that either Outlook isn't running any more, or if it does, that it isn't communicating. There is no use trying to pursue this method any further. Ending the Outlook process is probably the only thing you can do now.

Re: Programs still running (Windows XP home sp2)

Hi again Hans

With regard to 1) above I stopped Mailwasher pro in the processes tab and I managed to reinstall with no problems or even needing to restart pc with this program. Thanks

Problem 2) is still giving me a problem and I may try the same solution when I have my new base pc and data transferred. Do you think I will need to restart the pc if I stop Outlook in this same way? Thanks for your help and no doubt I will need to call on it again.

Regards
Bob

I'd try to end Outlook in the Processes tab of Task Manager. At this stage, I wouldn't try reinstalling Outlook - I don't think that'll be necessary.
Hopefully, you can then run your backup. If not, you'll probably have to restart your PC (which you don't want to do).

Remember that there are a lot of programs including one's "Pocket PC" that will turn on Outlook. Most fax and dialer programs will also. So you can kill the task from the Task monitor and then do your backups.

You might do a clean boot, and see if Outlook has been started, and then figure out what is starting it up.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Re: Programs still running (Windows XP home sp2)

Thanks guys.
Ended the program using the end Processes tab and this solved the problem without having to resort to a restart of pc. Did my backup of Outlook okay, started Outlook and closed as normal. Checked task manager and after a few moments it was gone from the applications & processes. Looks good although I do not know what caused this hiccup. Anyway nice to know for future reference.

Keep up the good work.
