    Another Explorer problem (XP/SP2)

Not quite the same as the existing thread! I too have suddenly lost the use of Windows Explorer, the screen clears to leave only the background with no other means of closing down than to use Ctrl Alt Del. A short cut that I created to a directory has an identical effect. All other icon short cuts to applications work. Once within an application I can navigate.

Using the START menu, identical behaviour results when I attempt to use all buttons on the right of the panel, including My Computer and Control Panel, but not Help and Support.

By coincidence I had run a complete virus check on the machine just before I noticed the problem and have since run the same check. No viruses were present on either occasion.

    Help!

I have just determined, contrary to what I said in my first post, that Set Program Access and Defaults does work in the START menu. Also, Run works, but when I tried to run Windows/Explorer.exe it fails in exactly the same manner.

Something to try: go to Tweaks and Tips, go to line # 157, and click the right hand item "Prevent Delay Opening My Computer/Explorer".

Have you checked the event logs? Are you saying you get no error message?

    Hans and Joe

Thanks for your different suggestions. I tried the "line 157" idea but it did not work. The icon certainly appears but on clicking it or the other functions that I mentioned nothing happens at all. The screen becomes blank except for the background picture. There are no error message at all.

I am happy to look at any event log but do not know how to do this, perhaps you can advise. Remember "Control Panel" does not function.

Running the explorer.exe file produces exactly the same effect. If indeed it is this file which has been corrupted how could I go about reloading it? When the machine was supplied it was pre-loaded with XP and no disc was supplied. Could it be downloaded from Microsoft?

To see the events try Start | Run | compmgmt.msc. For links to debugging startup issues see this thread Microsoft: Windows XP Pro - Explorer.exe keeps refreshing.

    Joe,

Of course, you can open Event Viewer from Computer Manager window, but it is more convinient to open it directly by typing
    eventvwr
    command in Run box.

I have now looked carefully on several occasions at the event logs, Application, Security, Systems, Internet Explorer, and there are no reports that coincide with the attempts to open Windows Explorer and the clearing of the screen. I will look carefully at the link that you suggested.

I thought you should know that everything works perfectly in Safe Mode, where to now?

I looked at the link but the pattern of defective behaviour is not the same. In some cases I would have needed to instal XP again and this would have required XP on CD. Will it be possible to make progress without it?

Something is being loaded that is blocking the use of these commands.
What is running when you have "Task Manager" open?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

If everything works fine in safe mode then either a driver or program loaded at normal startup is probably causing the issue. Use either Msconfig (Start | Run | msconfig.exe) or AutoRuns for Windows v8.61 to disable startup items. If you have the problem after disabling startup items then a driver is the cause. If not, then add back one program at a time to startup until you find the culprit.

    Re: Another Explorer problem (XP/SP2)

    Hi Dave

Thanks for taking an interest. When I access the Windows Task Manager I can see only about 10 processes listed in Safe Mode but approaching 60 in normal mode. In each case there are no applications running other than the one that manages the interaction with the keyboard.

There is only one difference in the way the machine starts up in each of the modes. About 6 weeks ago I loaded Internet Explorer 7. Since then I find that in normal mode there is always a warning:

"Procedure entry point GetProcessImageFileNameW could not be located in the dynamic link library PSAPI.DLL"

This does not happen in Safe Mode. I mention this only for completeness, the fault that we are discussing happened well after these messages appeared. In any case this message occurs on a second machine where there is no explorer fault.

If it would help I could send a list of the processes that are running but would prefer not to type them all if you know of a way of capturing the list electronically.

    Re: Another Explorer problem (XP/SP2)

This link Scott Hanselman's Computer Zen - The procedure entry point GetProcessImageFileNameW could not be located in the dynamic link library PSAPI.DLL (after IE7) from this Procedure entry point GetProcessImageFileNameW could not be located in the dynamic link library PSAPI.DLL - Google Search says that something you have installed has an older version of PSAPI.DLL. Get the <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15> Process Explorer for Windows v10.21 to find (CTRL+F) the instances of PSAPI.DLL and then terminate everything using PSAPI from somewhere other than C:Windowssytem32. Then go to those folders and rename PSAPI.DLL to PSAPI.OLD one folder at a time. Restart your system to see if the error message still occurs.

    Joe

Thanks for the advice about the spurious message. I will follow this separately unless you think it is critical to the explorer problem.

I have been using the msconfig.exe file and have made limited progress, as follows:

Using the "selective start up" options one by one I find that Explorer works when:

    "system.ini file" is checked

    "process win.ini file" is checked

but it does not work when

"load system services" is checked, however when I select this and restart the Load Start Up items box is also filled even though I did not select it.

I hope you can interpret this, I am now flying blind!
