    Mail Merge countries (2003)

I'm performing a mail-merge which includes a country merge field. How can I add a record number, that restarts when the country changes? That is, it will output 1-4 for Argentina but then needs to start from 1 again for Austria? Thanks, Andy.

    For a moment I thought you were planning a coup... <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

What is the data source of your mail merge? If it's Excel or Access, it would be easiest to create the numbering in the source.

The data source is Excel, although I would be interested to know how it would be done using Word fields? Andy.

The attached zip file contains two documents: Merge.doc contains merge fields, and Data.doc a simple data table.

You should run the mail merge wizard (task pane) to set up a mail merge in Merge.doc with Data.doc as data source.

View field codes (Alt+F9) in Merge.doc to see the rather complicated field manipulation used to generate the numbering. It is based on the ideas presented in How to use mail merge to create a list sorted by category in Word.

Thank you very much. I haven't had a chance to look at it yet, but expect, from past experience, that it will be good.. Andy.
