ZA not-a-virus

A few months ago, I installed ZoneAlarm Security Suite and all was well. Last week or thereabouts, it updated to 7.0.337.000. Again, all seemed well, until the first scan. Now its throwing in things like "not-a-virus:" followed by path and file name. Sorry I can't give you more details but when I close the scan window, I cannot find it again.

Has anyone experienced this and know what to do about it? My first experience with this problem was mIRC and I won't relate to you the havoc it created for me in allowing to play my favorite trivia game. Other things it throws in have to do with ad/malware (180 solutions, for one).

My question is... what the dickens is "not-a-virus". If it's not a virus, then why stick it in the virus section?

As always, any help is much appreciated.

If you look closely it will tell you what it is. For example it might say ad/ware. Click on apply to go with the repair suggestion it shows. If that doesn't take care of it it will go to quarantine. Also see my post concerning software that keeps popping up on my wifes computer that Iwas just about to post when I saw your post.
Thanks John

You might want to take a look at this thread and get some of the Ad-ware / spyware removal and protection tools mentioned to compliment your ZoneAlarm software. Unfortunately, no one program will protect you from all the junk out there today and a small groupe of tools seems to work best. The ones listed here are the ones most preferred by many of the Loungers. HTH

I couldn't agree with you more Doc. I have used ZA for a long time, and recently switched to ZASS. It is doing a great job of protecting my computers but as you say one cannot do it alone. ZASS has/is running in the back ground of my wides computer, and has picked up a lot of ad/ware and is slowly quarantining them. I run that along with Windows Defender (WD BTW has not picked up any of what ZASS is picking up).
I just ran PC Tools and it picked up 71 some of which are so they say dangerous.
Thanks John

Re: ZA not-a-virus

According to the Symantec information Adware.BargainBuddy - Symantec.com from your thread about Ad/Ware (starting with <post:=641,446>post 641,446</post:> ) Symantec antivirus is used to detect and remove this piece of malware. Windows Defender is not A/V software. So, it may not detect this or other stuff that ZASS considers a virus. Also, check what kind of scan WD is set to do. By default it is set to do a quick scan not a full system scan.

Re: ZA not-a-virus

I use ad/malware programs other than ZA and have found very few problems. Malware crapola I can deal with, or know someone who can. Or maybe I'm just a safe surfer , if there is such a thing. Repair doesn't work. Why am I not surprised at that. Quarantine...always a good idea.

But perhaps I stated my question incorrectly. What I want to know is what is the "not-a-virus" designation that ZA throws out. The ZA message boards are not much help. It seems that they are as confused as I am.

Another thought... Why tell me its "not a virus". Heck, I don't need to that things are "not a virus". Color me confused.

If there are ZoneLabs employees in the forums and they are confused then I will probably remain a mystery. I don't run ZASS and probably never will.

Re: ZA not-a-virus

Some time back, there was a spate of "annoyance" applications (meant to be humourous) doing the rounds as e-mail attachments. IIRC, some of these became included in AV sig files, with descriptions like what you mention... "Not a virus, but ..."

See for instance http://www.sophos.com/pressoffice/news/art...ssary.html#joke and F-Secure Computer Virus Information Pages: Joke.Win32.Russ.

Alan, I remember that one quite well. I found it quite humorous but was careful whom I passed it on to because my acquaintances who were not computer literate would be terrified by it. I remember a discussion a few years back with my offsite IT guru and asking why the AV had quarantined my cute little exe file.

Thanks for all the help My system works fine so I will just wait for the ZA folks to implement the Raid can on their kooties. Sometimes I get entirely too carried away with the emoticons. But they're just so much fun
