    Ad/Ware

For the past few days I have been watching my wifes computer, and ZASS keeps popping up with a scan showing "this is not a virus..Ad/Ware.
The culprit is something called BargainBuddy. I looked it up and found that it comes bundled but of course ExactAdvertising doesn't say with what. According to ExactAdvertising I should be able to remove it under The Bullseye Network, but of course there is nothing in the ad/remove named that. There are two programs on that computer that I didn't install the first is Trillian which is a chat program (teenager installed), and the other is something called Python. I looked that up and see that it is some kind of programming language.
I am going to remove Trillion and see if that takes care of the BargainBuddy, but not sure about Python. Any suggestions?
    Thanks John

    John,

BargainBuddy is junk of the first order. Here's the removal tool from Symantec.

Thanks Doc for both. Do you think then that the Python is safe to remove? Of course I would do a restore point as well as a reg back up first.
    Thanks John

Python is certainly OK to remove as long as you are not running something that requires it. Do you still have the installation package? If not, it may have been installed as part of something else.

after further review, I find "Apparently some of HP/Compaqs' administrative tools are written in Python." The article also states that "ALL Apple computers running Mac OS X have Python installed It's included in the base installation". After an online chat with HP I found out that this is the case on my wifes HP. No worries then.

As you note, Python is a programming language. Applications written in Python may install Python files (such as DLLs) on your system. If you're not sure whether you use applications written in Python, I would leave it alone. Python itself is not malware.

It may well be the case that Python has been used to write various malware apps. When these have been reported to security sites, they have been poorly dealt with by AV and similar companies, identifying any app with a Python signature as malware. The same thing happened with apps written in Autoit. I'd leave the Python-based app alone for the moment, but report the detection of same to ZASS.

Thanks All for the help and advice. No ZASS nor my newly installed Sbybot S & D did not detect the Python. I saw that in the Add/Remove Programs when I was looking for the program to uninstall BargainBuddy, which uninstalled nicely using the Norton tool (TYVM!). So all is better now in computer land. FYI I e-mailed ExactAdvertising, and they were kind enough to send me a removal tool had Norton not of worked. As a side note, I almost fell into the Spywarebot.net trap too! ...Yikes <img src=/S/bouncenburn.gif border=0 alt=bouncenburn width=31 height=31>
