Contacts vs address book

Folks,

I am having a problem to understand Outlook Contacts vs. Address book.

Basically I have a bunch of contacts, most of them having e-mail addresses. However, when I compose a news message and hit the "TO" button they do not show up (the list is empty).

I gather that this is due to the fact that my contacts have not been entered in my address book... but why ? And more importantly, how do I solve this ?!

Regards

Internet Mail only - Office 2K SP1

> right click on the contacts folder and choose properties.

Yes - actually the check box is greyed (I can't change it) and checked. For some reason the "name of address book" field reads as Contacts1, which is what is displayed when clicking on the TO field of the message form.

Any further suggestion welcome !

Re: Contacts vs address book

Here is what I have done to correct this.

Select from your menu bar Tools > Services
On the services tab, click Add, then select Outlook Address book. Click ok. Now when you go back to the properties of your contacts (right click on folder, then properties), you should be able to click on the check box.

To have your contact folder appear first when you click on the "to" button, select Tools > Services. Go to the addressing tab. The first selection states "show this address list first." Select your contacts folder (or any other one that you wish).

Hope this helps and I sincerely hope that it works.

unfortunately, IMO mode doesn't have services it has accounts. I think he needs to use the mapi32.inf hack, but will need to check on that unless someone who uses IMO posts the fix first (i don't use IMO either)

shoot - i think i know what is wrong - somewhere there is an option to share contacts with outlook express. find that and toggle it. you might be looking at an empty address book.

i think it's in the address book dialog (when you hit the to button) but it could be in accounts.

I guess I don't understand the problem completely. I have had similar problems with Outlook. The solution I proposed has worked every time. Did you actually try what I suggested and found it wanting?

Re: Contacts vs address book

Are you familiar with the two modes of outlook? The mode is identified in help > about.

Each mode has some differences. tools > services is non-existant in IMO mode, it's tools > accounts instead.

While your solution is correct for corp mode, it won't work in IMO.

the inf file is missing the information to set up the address book and you need to add the correct line and run it. i think there is a kb on it. http://support.microsoft.com

I guess I am not familiar with IMO mode, because I haven't a clue what you are talking about. Without breaking the thread of this conversation, perhaps you can e-mail me privately to explain what this is all about. I have never gone to Tools > Accounts. I have always seen Tools > Services.
