Where to from Win95?

Apparently having an "original Win95 Upgrade CD" does not bring the "Collector" status I thought it would. Now the dogs in the streets of Markham, a suburb to the north of Toronto, are crossing the street to avoid me.

    I hate change.

But you-all are going to advise me what I should move to.

I work at home, non-networked system, using Office97 (still!) and Corel & Lotus suites. I use a dial-up modem (56K) and like the simple life.

The Windows-of-choice ought to be stable and be supporting mainstream applications.

I have a flyer here that lists :

CDN $155 Windows 98 Second Edition
    CDN $148 Windows ME
    CDN $250 Windows 2000 Professional

My personal view, based on the prices you list, would be to spend as much as you can - the costs are pretty well in proportion to their appeal to me. The only problems I have ever experienced with W2K are with (cruddy) games.

A cheaper alternative - if it's only your standing with the canine community of Markham that bothers you - would be to carry either a large dog-bone (unwrapped), or a couple of cats.

Thanks, Leif, for the prompt response. I still welcome comments from others.

I confess that discussions in WOW and similar have been largely academic up until now. I remember the debcle of Office 97 SR! & SR2.

Have you ever tried CARRYING two cats at once? get real, man! (grin!)

    I think you meant

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Edited by ileacy on 27-Jul-01 09:47.
Hi Chris:

Windows 98 SE is more stable than Windows ME, and, has a minimal learning curve from Windows 95. Most systems that run Windows 95 can run Windows 98.

Windows 2K is more stable than Windows 98, but, has much stricter hardware requirements. Most systems running Windows 95 are severely underpowered for Windows 2k. The learning curve is also much steeper.

Windows XP is on the near horizon (end of October).

In your case, I would probably recommend.

1)Get and install Windows 98 SE.

2)Start learning about Windows 2K and by extension Windows XP.

3)Think seriously about upgrading both hardware and software in late 2001, early 2002.

Edited to correct date typos. Tx Dave.

    Ian, thanks for this.

Given that my machine is 4 years old, 233MHz, 64M and has a hard drive hanging out where the skin would be (overheating) my best bet would seem to be Win98 and then upgrade hardware and software next year.

And THIS inspires confidence in an upgrade? (grin!)

Thanks for this. I'm taking delivery, he promised me, at 4pm today, of an Abit motherboard, Celeron 700MHz, 256MB, tower, and Windows 98 2nd ed.
