    HDDs - Vista

In browsing the Seagate site, it seems their 3.5 HDDs are compatible with virtually every Windows OS - other than Vista. Trying to research elsewhere, there seems to be little to indicate what specific HDD features are required for Vista. I realise that compatibility lists for Vista are somewhat behind the times, but it seems strange that one of the more key HDD players has yet to iron out this issue with M$.

Has anyone else looked at the "issue" of what it takes to qualify?

Were you perhaps looking at data sheets (PDF) that haven't been updated yet to include the word Vista in the text? I can't imagine that Vista would require a "new" drive specification. See Seagate Technology - How to setup a drive in Windows Vista

    Re: HDDs - Vista

Product availability in Europe is different from the US - so I was looking there. Following through on the US site, however, the same pages appear. All the 2.5 HDDs are mentioned as being Vista compatible. The 3.5 pages either mention XP & on back or are silent. I take your point that the docs may be outdated - OTOH they are all dated 2007 at the foot. The date on a "live" document was the origin of the questioning.

Having noted from another topic that you've been looking at the various versions of SATA - may I ask if you've got a link to an "idiot's guide" as to which is which. (As ever, the latest is always the greatest.!) <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

    Re: HDDs - Vista

To be honest about it, when I bought the 250 gig second drive for this computer, I never thought anything about versions or levels of SATA. I bought a Hitachi from Buy.Com because of the good price and immediately installed (dual boot) the beta from MS of pre-announce Vista. It was only later, here in The Lounge, that I saw someone else mention the topic. I'd have to search the threads and I'm heading out for work so you'll probably be able to beat me to it.

A few minutes later... Hang on, I think this is the link you might want to read: Serial ATA
