setting permissions for folder sharing (XP Pro)

Hi,
I am trying to share a folder in the Program Files folder over my network. I have gone to My Computer, tools, view, and turned off simple file sharing. This has allowed me to at least get the sharing symbol to appear on Program Files and the folder I want to share. But when I try to access the Program Files folder from another computer I am denied access. It says I don't have permission.

I don't know how to set the permissions. When I try to set permission for the two other computers to access the folder I want, the only location that I can choose from is on the local computer. I cannot choose my network. I have tried entering the computer names that I want to allow access but I am told that it cannot find those names. When I click on the location button the only location available is the local computer.

Is there someway to get Windows to "see" the other computers or the network?

Thanks,

Bret

Check your firewall, as the IP address from the visiting machine may not have permissions.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

The Windows firewall is disabled. I use Zonealarm and have it turned off while I am trying to set this up. I have always shared the "shared documents" folder on this computer with the other two computers for as long as I have had the network.

I moved your thread here because the first thing I'm gonna suggest has to do with StarPost <post:=589,883>post 589,883</post:>. Please check the Guest Account:

User accounts:

* Make sure that you are using the same username and password on all PCs
* Make sure the guest account is enabled by typing net user guest /active:yes
to a command prompt on each PC

I don't know fer sure if this is the problem, but it's one that many people don't think about.

Just an update. I don't know which thing worked but something in all the help I was given did the trick. I can now access the folders and files needed.

Thanks to all,

Bret
