    OL 2003 quirky inbox?? (OL 2003 sp2 / winxp sp2)

I found out I had a funny issue in outlook when I tried to used MacroExpress to create a hot key to mark seneders as blocked as junk mail. The issue apparently has nothing to do with the macro, just an anomoly that is repeatable without macroexpress.

when I am in my inbox folder with any message highlighted as selected and I press ANY KEY (other than alt, ctrl, shift), it moves the selection down to the lowest item in the inbox folder. For example, if there are 10 messages and I have the focus on number 2, if I press "h" the focus goes to number 10.

I have searched every menu to see if there is some funny hot key going on in out look and cannot find anything like that ...

does anyone know what could cause this or how to troubleshoot it?

    thanks,

    tom

I guess no one knows how to fix this... I've sure wasted a lot of time trying, so that isn't too surprising...

how about this... Does anyone know of another way to use a keystroke short cut to put an email address into the ADD TO BLOCKED SENDERS LIST???

    Thanks,

There is no built-in keyboard shortcut for this, and creating custom keyboard shortcut is not easy, if at all possible.
You could use Tools | Customize to add the "Add to blocked senders list" button (from the Actions category) to a toolbar.

What are your settings under Tools | Options | Other | Reading Pane? Do you have any specific mouse actions attached to Outlook in the Control Panel Mouse dialog?

If Tom were to drag the "Add to Blocked Senders List" menu item to the text menus, such as under Actions Menu, he could use a two-key keystroke shortcut "Alt-A, B".

    Hi John-

These are my reading pane setting:
    Panel Mouse dialog?
unmarked: mark as read when viewed in the Reading Pane
Marked: mark item as read when selection changes and single key reading using space bar (I don't know what this single key reading feature is).

I have no options to set mouse movements in outlook that I can find, so I would say I do not have any <g>.

    thanks,

    tom

    > I don't know what this single key reading feature is

If you tap the spacebar the selection moves to the next message (but not ten messages down the way yours seems to.

    > Panel Mouse dialog?

That would be the Start | Settings | Contol Panel | Mouse | Buttons tab | check "Enable specific program settings" | Settings dialog. Not a common place to hook mouse behavior, you probably don't have anything set in there.

What is your sort order? I know that a single letter will navigate to the first match when I sort by From or Subject; "h" does nothing when sorted by Received date/time. I don't use grouping, so I don't know effect that might have.

If I recall correctly, the only keyboard shortcuts you can assign in Outlook are menu/toolbar accelerator keys. As noted in the Hans/John branch, if you create a new toolbar button and assign an accelerator key using the & symbol in the button's text, then you can use Alt+key to press the button from the keyboard.

    Example: &Block!

    Button shows: Block!

If you are displaying the Advanced toolbar, this would conflict with the accelerator for Back (to previously viewed folder), making Alt+B stop functioning (it might select the button but not actually execute it). You can use toolbar customization to remove the accelerator from the Back button (delete the &) or you can choose a different (available) accelerator for your button. I think X might be available and appropriate in this case. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

thanks, john. No I have no settings there .... there actually isn't a "enable specific program setting" but I see the dialog box.

Thanks, Hans. that does work... I'd still like to solve the problem since I may want to run other macros and I'll have to kill the macro on my other machines and change to this procedure just to keep them all the same.

I sort by Date, last first.
