ZOne Alarm Outlook add-in

Zone Alarm free firewall offered me an update which I downloaded and installed, so now I'm on 7.0.337.000. Now without apparently asking me it has installed a junk email and anti-fraud filter and produced a ZoneAlarm Outlook add-in toolbar in Outlook. Did I ask for this? No. Do I want it? No. So how do I get rid of it?

Or have I mistakenly downloaded the update to some thing more than just the firewall?

I also found that upgrade notice this afternoon, Ian, and I went to the ZA site and downloaded and installed the same 337 version you did. I don't use Outlook so have not been made aware of anything like what you've seen. I wonder if ZA is "smart" enough to know that I don't use Outlook?

Sorry for the dumb question, but how do you know that ZA has installed something you didn't approve?

<How do I get rid of them?

Just go to the anti Virus-Anti Spyware tab and check "OFF" radio button for each one.

Ian,
My mistake.
I was looking at the screenshot for the paid version. The free version apparently doesn't have that tab available.

Re: ZOne Alarm Outlook add-in

How do I know I didn''t approve it? There was no mention in the installation process of this *feature*.

I already have various anti-spyware programs running (Windows Defender, plus occasional use of Adaware and of Spybot S & D) and I have the junk email features of Outlook 2003. Now I find ZA trying to get me to let it compile lists of safe senders and the like. Will that play nicely with the junk email features, safe senders lists etc that are already a feature of Outlook? I'm concerned that it may not.

Depending on your version of Outlook, look for and remove the COM Add-in as below

Re: ZOne Alarm Outlook add-in

Thanks. That seems to deal with it.

One thing that confuses me is that in the ZA PDF manual, it says that this feature is part of ZA Security Suite, and on the ZA site I didn't click the link to try the suite, I clicked instead on the link that said "I only want basic ZoneAlarm protection", and I downloaded and installed the file that it linked to.. But nevertheless, this feature seems to have appeared!

No doubt it is very good, but it worries me to have both ZA and Outlook itself trying to do the same thing. What would happen, for instance, if someone's email address was on my safe senders list in Outlook, but on the junk email list in the ZA add-in?

Although it will be of no comfort to you, nothing of that nature gets added in by the free Zone Alarm 737 if you use Outlook Express...

I've no idea what would happen, I'm sorry to say! And I've no idea why you should have got more than you expected with the download - it does sound more like the Security Suite add-in.
I believe you can set ZA to create a white list from all your contacts, and manually add/delete email addresses - did you get an option menu as below?

Yes - I did get the option menu you show. But I have taken your earlier advice and disabled the add-in.

I think that this is not just part of the Security Suite now. There are complaints from others on the ZA forum of the same issue with the latest firewall download. I have linked there to your advice about the add-in, and one of their readers at least has followed it and is grateful.

Re: Zone Alarm Outlook add-in

Ian,
I too would be upset with any software that installed anything other than what it says, on my PC. I looked at ZA's web site and nope there is nothing to indicate that the mail filter is in either the paid firewall or the free one. But! I am using ZASS 7.0.337 with the MailFrontier installed, Outllok '07 and ChoiceMailOne and I have no compatability problems. Once MailFrontier was set up and learned my e-mails, I have had no instances of mail being filterd out that wasn't supposed to be. You can opt to not view the toolbar by unchecking it in the View toolbars I don't have it showing on my laptop. IMHO I would let MailFrontier run. But it would still upset me greatly if software were installed that I didn't want or know about. I don't want to sound like a commercial for ZA, but I have used it for so long, that I have made the decsion to hold off on Vista for my laptop until ZA is ready. Even though I have had some recent problems with it, I won't leave home without it. Just my worth.
Thanks John

Re: Zone Alarm Outlook add-in

Well, I've disabled the add-in following Leif's instructions above.

I am sure that the new facility in ZA is a useful one, but it would be nice to be able to turn it on or off. My wife has Outlook 2002, not 2003, so doesn't get the Outlook junk mail filter, so I imagine the ZA feature will be good in her case.
