Windows/Microsoft Update bug? (Ultimate)

There seems to be a bug in Windows update for Vista. In previous editions of Windows, one has the option to use Windows Update on the web, or to switch to Microsoft Update to get updates for other MS products. In Vista, this is done by clicking on the "get updates for other products" on the Windows Update page (which now seems to be resident on the computer rather than being on a web page). The problem is that when I elect to add other software updates to the service (ie use Microsoft update), all the updates go away, and the program shows that there are no available updates. This means that it is impossible to find updates for Office, Visual Studio, and other MS products I have installed. For example, in Office, if I click on Check for Updates, the link sends me to Microsoft Update, which then reverts me to the condition of showing no available updates for anything.

This appears to be a bug in Windows Update for Vista. In the meantime, are there any workarounds?

Perhaps there are currently no updates for your Office applications?

Re: Windows/Microsoft Update bug? (Ultimate)

But the problem is that even uninstalled updates for Windows no longer show as available. Before I switched over to Microsoft updates, Windows Update showed about 21 optional updates avaiable, most of them Windows Ultimate Extras. After the switch, it shows no updates available of any kind. After I again switched back to showing ONLY windows updates, all those optional uninstalled updates show again.

So how will I ever know if there are any critical or security updates for Office?

I've been running Windows Update as is out of the box and have gotten both Windows & Office updates. I don't recall having done anything special. What version of Office are you running?

Perhaps someone who has Windows Vista can comment on that.

There are various websites that discuss Microsoft's updates, for example AskWoody.com.

I also am running Office 2007. The only update that I recall is a spam filter update in March. I'll check that when I get home tonight.

There has been ONLY "junk Mail" up dates for Office 2007 at this time.

Have you taken a look at what listed at "View update History" and ""Restore hidden updates"?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Re: Windows/Microsoft Update bug? (Ultimate)

Updates History shows all past updates as it is supposed to. I have no hidden updates to restore. Now that I have reverted to Windows updates, rather than MS Updates, the available Vista updates show. I tried again to reset MS updates, but again when I do, it shows no windows updates available. In either case, Updates History is correct and Restore Hidden shows no hidden updates.

I did get the recent Outlook junk email filter a few days ago, so the program worked correctly then. Maybe it will work correctly when new office updates are released, but I won't know because I have reverted to Windows Updates in order to keep track of Windows patches. Perhaps I'll just have to keep switching back and forth between WU and MU.

By the way, in addition to Office 2007, I am also running Visual Studio Express and SQL Express so I am concerned to keep on top of patches for those products, too.

Can you provide a few examples of these "Vista updates" which show when not using Microsoft Update? I ran a little experiment by changing the Settings for Automatic Update and disabled "Check for Additional Products" which reverted it back to just Windows Update. I then checked for new updates and the only 2 that came up were 2 optional "Extras" and nothing more. I then went through the process of reverting back to Microsoft Update (Check for Additional Products) and again ran another scan to check for new updates and got the same result. I'm running Office 2003 at the moment.

IF these "Vista updates" which you see with using just Windows Update are actual Critical/Security updates, then I would say you do have a problem. IF, however, they are updates for 3rd-party applications and/or hardware drivers, then I have to assume that somewhere along the line you opted to receive these non-essential updates. I do NOT install anything other than Microsoft Critical/Security updates unless a hardware manufacturer specifically recommends to use them until they release a full version driver for their product.

Sure. They include 15 Vista Ultimate language packs, 3 Vista Ultimate "extras," and something called Microsoft - Other Hardware - HID nonuser input data filter (I have no idea what that last item is). They are all optional updates. When I opt for Check for Additional Updates, none of these show. Instead I get a window that says there are no available updates.

Thus these are not something that "somewhere along the line i opted to receive." They were there when I first took the machine out of the box and plugged it in on Thursday (new machine). I haven't had the computer more than a few days and haven't been installing new hardware or changing drivers.

I went to the following web site:
http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsg...ng=en&cr=US
and did a search on the phrase "ultimate extras." I found that there are other people with the same problem, although it doesn't seem that there is a good solution yet. Many people remained stumped.

Edited to add the following:

Ultimately, I am not concerned about critical Windows updates, because all I have to do is not check the box that says "Check for other product updates" and revert to only Windows Updates. What is unclear, however, is whether or not I will be able to get other critical Microsoft updates, such as for Office.

Now everything makes perfect sense.... at least to me. When I first ran Microsoft/Windows Update I too got all those items you mentioned and I immediately chose to "Hide" them since they were not something I would ever install. That's why I don't see them now. The last item "Microsoft - Other Hardware - HID nonuser input data filter" I believe applies to a mouse setting, which I allowed to install. I did Google that item when I first saw it and realized it was something I needed/wanted, but unfortunately and I do apologize, I have forgotten the specifics of that item and thus I cannot elaborate on it for you.

The "Ultimate Extras" pertain ONLY to those using the "Ultimate" edition. If you are not using the "Ultimate Edition" then you can simply right click on each and choose to "Hide" them.

Hopefully, the above information will bring some relief to your consternation.

I'm afraid I haven't explained my problem very well, so let start over and try again with a couple of screen shots. (I am using Ultimate, by the way, so the Ultimate Extras do display and may be of interest to me). If I use Windows Update only, I get the view in the attached screen shot. (It appears that I can add only one attachment per message, so I will follow this post with another message with my "after" screenshot. Note in the first shot that all the available windows updates show. Note also that it says toward the bottom "You receive updates for windows only." If I click the link at the bottom that says Get updates for more products, then I get the window that you will see in the screenshot in my next post.

Re: Windows/Microsoft Update bug? (Ultimate)

Part 2: When I click on "Get updates for more products," a window opens for me to install Microsoft updates. Then when I go to Windows Update to check for updates, I get the window in this second screen shot.

So, again, my concern is not about missing those optional Windows updates that you saw. My concern is that if I want to get critical Office updates, I have to activate Microsoft Update (i.e click on "Get updates for more products."), but when I do that, I can't get any updates at all.

BY "Part 2: When I click on "Get updates for more products," a window opens for me to install Microsoft updates." do you mean to install the Microsoft Update AcitveX controls? You must install those to have the Microsoft updates site work correctly.
