user name says default when opening an excel file (2003)

I have several workbooks saved on a windows based network drive. When one user opens a workbook and then another tries to open the same workbook the message usually says that the file is locked by the user name that has it open, but other times it just says that the document is locked by the user name "default". Why would excel sometimes populate the user name with the correct users name and other times use "default"?

Has every user filled in his or her username in the General tab of Tools | Options...? If not, it will be whatever it was when Excel was installed, which might well be "Default".

Excellent! I had not considered the Excel settings as I assumed that it was pulling from their network login id. Thanks Hans!
