    setup.ini (XP SP2)

I wanted to modify a line in Startup (which msconfig does not seem able to do) but when I searched for a file named startup.ini I couldn't find it.

Where is the file stored? Or, what name is it under?

Also, is it a simple text file - I need to change the name of a subdir.

    THX!

    Startup.ini or Setup.ini ?

And to setup/startup what? In your search, did you set the option to include hidden and system files?

There is no file called startup.ini as far as I know. C:Boot.ini contains information about how your PC boots.
There are two folders that are used to start applications automatically:

Cocuments and SettingsAll UsersStart MenuProgramsStartup (for all users)
Cocuments and Settings<username>Start MenuProgramsStartup (for you only)

and there are some locations in the Registry to specify programs and services that start automatically:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentV ersionRun
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentV ersionRunServices
    HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVe rsionRun
    HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVe rsionRunServices

You can view and edit registry entries by selecting Start | Run, typing regedit and pressing Enter, but be careful.

I don't think there IS a file named startup.ini that applies to Windows start up. I have one but it is for Zone Alarm only.

Most changes to start ups running have to be done in the registry so far as I know. Or by going into Windows Explorer and looking at the shortcuts stored in Documents & Settings>%username%>startmenu>programs>startup.

A good source of listings of startups is:

There is a hidden system file named boot.ini in the root of your system drive (usually c: ).

You can access it from System Properties: open System Properties window (from Control Panel or by clicking Windows and Pause/Break keys simultaneously), then click Advanced tab and then Settings button in "Startup and Recovery" section. You can edit boot.ini file (for example, add /noexecute=AlwaysOff switch) by clicking Edit button in "Startup and Recovery" window.

    Re: setup.ini (XP SP2)

Thx - looks like I will need to alter the existing path in the Registry.
