Will wide-screen monitor work on my PC?

How does one determine whether or not a wide-screen LCD monitor (resolution 1680x1024) will work on a PC which currently uses a CRT monitor set to 1280x1024, driven by a VIA/S3G KM400/KN400 display adapter?

The monitor offers "analogue (VGA) and digital (DVI - Digital Video Interface) with HDCP support (High-Bandwidth Digital Copy Protection) connectivity", but only the analogue/VGA interface will be relevant.

Will the driver supplied on the CD (I presume) take care of the matter, or will I need to get a new graphics card?

    Thanks

    John

    John,
I am not familiar with your chip set so I cannot say you have a match there, but a spec sheet for the adapter may say so. I think that chip set is often found on integrated adapters, that is, built on the motherboard. The CD you referred to is for the display I presume and not the video adapter? If so the CD should have any display drivers needed so run the CD. But you know the standard mantra about downloading the latest drivers- I would do this only if you run into a problem.

One approach is to simply try the monitor and see if the display properties window recognizes the monitor and lets you set the resolution. After hooking up the monitor and powering up the computer, right click desktop, properties, settings . If the display is recognized (make sure it is selected) , but the 1680 x 1024 resolution is not allowed your adapter may not support it. That's probably a good way to start to see what happens.

According to a PDF file found on a random web site, your system board claims the following for the integrated graphics:

Thanks, Jefferson - let's hope that the random website is correct!

PS It seems that my post later yesterday didn't make it, but I pointed out my typo where the resolution should have been 1680x1050, and that I didn't actually have a monitor to try (that might have been more logical than asking the question on the board?!), and that I might need to contact the PC manufacturers to ask whether the monitor would work - although the PCs are about 3-4 years old.

Re: Will wide-screen monitor work on my PC?

PS I got a 1680x1050 monitor several months ago, 20" diagonal. Nice. Within a few days my wrist was killing me. I attributed this to the greater mouse travel distance compared with 1280x800 and to compensate I increased the acceleration setting in the control panel to try to get across the screen with less motion. Seems better now. Or maybe it's the painkillers. <img src=/S/wink.gif border=0 alt=wink width=15 height=15>

Thanks for mentioning that Jefferson. I've also got a 20" diagonal monitor, and have been experiencing a new twinge in my wrist. I'll try your suggestion of speeding up the acceleration.

Thanks - trick works with a 24" Diag Wide screen. Althouh I also made sure the Fast Initialization box was checked as well. Previously it was not.
