    Snail Speed Go!

I'm a very suspicious. My wife's computer has suddenly, well, the last month or so become to run like a snail. I have XP installed and I'm running Norton Anti-Virus since a week. Any ideas what I can do, because it used to be lightening fast. The boot up took no time at all, now it's terrible. NAV does not reveal any results and Spybot Search and Destroy doesn't give any answers either. Any help?

Sounds like you have some malware or spyware that's gotten on the system. I'm assuming that the slowdown occurred before you installed Norton or Spybot.

Take a look at this thread and see if installing Adaware and SpywareBlaster can help detect and remove the problem. You might also want to look into a firewall other than the one that comes with XP. It provides no outbound protection. Take a look at this thread about firewalls.

    Only about a thousand things could cause this! <img src=/S/anigrin.gif border=0 alt=anigrin width=19 height=19>

Are your NAV and Spybot services up to date? Have you run alternative spyware services such as Ad-Aware? Are you defragging? Are using a generic cleanup tool such as CCleaner to remove unnecessary registry entries and temporary files?

Have you reviewed all the programs and processes being started up? (Run MSConfig.exe, look at the Startup tab.) Have you run SysInternals AutoRuns and Root Kit Revealer to see if there are additional hidden startup programs or embedded malware?

Hmmm. I always thought that NAV had its own firewall. I bought it as part of a package that came with my new laptop, and the licence was for 2 pc's. Do I need to install another firewall? In the NAV window it says there is a firewall running, is that sufficient?

Symantec offers a line of Norton products. If you have the Norton Internet Security suite, then you have the Norton Personal Firewall component. If you have Norton Antivirus, you might have only the Windows firewall.
