Start Menu Top Level (WinXP SP-2)

I've always just used the Classic Start Menu with XP. I thought I'd at least look through the new format.

Question:

When I open up "Cocuments and SettingsAll UsersStart Menu" in explorer, for instance, I see (I put it there) a "Microsoft Update". This is what I expect... and I see it on the "top level" of the Start menu" if I'm using the Classic view.

But if I switch to the "New" view, it's gone. I don't (necessarily) need to know where it went, but I would like to know how I get items to show up on the top level of the "new" Start Menu.

I understand I can "pin" items via right-clicking, but the item has to be there to right click!

Any idea how I get there?

What are you trying to accomplish here?
Is it a problem or just curiousity?

When I switch from Classic to "New' version, ( using Explorer as you mentioned ) Windows update is there in both instances. I assume you mean that it's in the Start Menu folder itself rather than under Programs or another folder?
I believe MSWU is put there as a default rather than an option. I know I didn't put it there, one way or another.

Later on in your post, it looks like you are looking for it in the Desktop Start Menu.

In "Windows XP" mode, the item will be displayed at the top of the All Programs menu instead of the top of the Start Menu. The top of the Start Menu contains pinned programs.

If you want Microsoft Update in the pinned programs list, open the All Programs menu and drag Microsoft Update to the pinned items list.

You can also open Windows Explorer and go to Docs & Settings>All Users>Start Menu and right click Windows Update. A menu option is to pin this to the Start Menu.

Mine wouldn't drag. Strange... When I try to right-click it, there's a visual that seems like a pop-up being blocked. Also starnge.

They are shortcuts in Cocuments and Settings<username>Start Menu or in Cocuments and SettingsAll UsersStart Menu.

By modify, if you want to pin them to Start Menu just open all Programs, right click on one and look for "pin to start menu"

Geez, Bob! Now you and Doc can both make me feel bad that on top of being (a bit) slow, and (at times) cantankerous, I'm also facing a reality that I am blind as well!
