    Ultimate Update Hangs (Vista Ultimate)

I had successfully been using Vista Business since it was released but needed some multi media features. I tried to do an update with a new Ultimate disk. It is currently 7 hours latter and has been @ 77% for 6.5 hours of that. The dots are moving and the hard drive light does a quick blink every 5 or 6 seconds but no move from 77%. I am obviously reluctant to just shut down but if I have to - will I be able to get back to a working system without reinstalling from start. I do have a BART PE disk so I can boot and access the hard drive to move or rename if needed. I am seeking help before it is too late.

I cannot guarantee that you won't totally botch the update and/or your system, but usually canceling the installation will then start the "restore" of your previous Windows installation. YMMV It's a precarious situation to be in for sure and I feel for you. Again, generally, stalls like you are experiencing happen because you have some installed programs that either write to disc or monitor HDD activity, e.g., antivirus programs, firewalls, etc., or applications such as True Image which checks for changes on the disc. Those items must either be totally disabled or uninstalled BEFORE doing an in place upgrade and then reinstalled after the update completes. These are general guidelines and are worthy of consideration.

In place upgrades do take considerably longer to complete than a clean install. Five or six hours is not uncommon for a system that has many applications and/or data. Mine took nearly 3 1/2 hours to complete and it only consisted of 11 gigs in total.

Re: Ultimate Update Hangs (Vista Ultimate)

I have already click the cancel. I get the message that it cannot cancel because it would leave the computer in a a potentially unstable state. I did have an issue with Nero which I thought I had uninstalled. Twice it stopped early indicating an issue with Nero. I uninstalled, Clean registry and the third time it got to this point. One hour later and still 77%

So my only choice seems to be a hard reboot and all bets are off. I have all my data on a second partition (from experience) including 'my document.s although Vista does some weird things with data I haven't completely figured it out. I also have all my installation programs on a separate disk. ready to install. Still the annoyance factor is huge. Any clues about what I might face would help.

Well, the worst possible scenario would be you would be left with an unbootable system and probably unrecoverable too, unless you have a full system backup image, e.g., a True Image or Ghost backup image.

On the other hand, since you have all your data and applications saved elsewhere, what do you have to lose? Most likely, if you had to do a clean install of Vista and then install all your applications and transfer your data over, it just might take less time. <IMG SRC=http://www.the-highway.com/Smileys/giggle.gif>

In my particular case, my system was squeaky clean, defragged, and running perfectly before I did the in place install. Should you have to do a clean install, just boot with the Vista DVD and go for it. A clean install only takes between 30-45 minutes and it requires extremely little user input which is required at the very start and not much more until the very end. It is exponentially faster and easier to install than XP, which isn't that bad either. Let's face it, at this point you don't have many options to choose from. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

Just be sure that you have all your ducks in a row, i.e., ALL your applications and drivers are Vista-compatible, which you should have done anyway before trying the in place install.

Re: Ultimate Update Hangs (Vista Ultimate)

I bit the bullet and hit the reset button. A window flashed by indicating a failed install. It then rebooted, acted like a system restore and went back to my original working Vista Business system. The login came up fine. took my password and had a message on the screen about a failed installation and I should contact MS. Other than that all is back to normal with Vista Business. I still want to upgrade to Ultimate but I will reduce any working application, uninstall as much as feasible and try again later..

I am pleased that resetting at the failed part of the upgrade simply restored to a functional system. Nerve racking but successful. Not the way I wanted it to be but better than a new installation.

I will close this for now. -- Thanks for the dialogue.

One additional note is that you must have sufficient free space on the drive to install Vista, and I have a suspicion that Microsoft may have lowballed the requirement in their specifications.

My experience was almost identical to yours, but I did get it after several tries, and I increased the amount of free space between tries. I also disabled or uninstalled active programs (acting on the same advice as you were given), but what determined the outcome I don't really know. Microsoft's advice as to what is or is not compatible might also be taken with a grain of salt.

Where did you get the "DVD" to do the upgrade?

Vista has a on the computer upgrade, Call "Windows Anytime Upgrade". It can be found at "Start, All Programs, Extras ans Upgrades, Windows Anytime Upgrade". The plan was that ALL of the OS is copied to the machine and based on the Key Code what items will be available to the computer. All that one is needed to do buy a new Key Code from MS and then enter the new Key Code using the on board update program.

Re: Ultimate Update Hangs (Vista Ultimate)

It was a retailer copy with a disk for Ultimate 32 and one for Ultimate 64. I did get it to install - here's how.
I downloaded the Nero removal tool and ran it IN SAFE MODE to get rid of all remnants of Nero 7.
I used msconfig and disabled all startup items.
I used a registry cleaner to any miscellaneous settings.
Then ran the update from within windows and it went through.
Still I am finding some programs did not carry over or acted quirky Quick books would not email or write a PDF (an update fixed it). Some outlook addins needed to be reinstalled. I am sure I will find others over time but the media components work fine which is what I wanted to integrate with a plasma TV. So I am pleased it work, Aggravated I had to jump so many hoops. But it seem ok now and I am pleased.
I hope this process can help other who hit the wall.

I would suggest to those who are following this and are considering upgrading a Vista product, to try and going to "Start, right click Computer" scroll do to the bottom and select "Change product Key" and enter the NEW product key that one has bought. This should upgrade the current Vista Version to the new bought version.

This said some OEM's may have made changes here.
