    2 Browsers open simultaneously (IE6)

    Morning -

We just went to Free AOL. Some people using the computer access AOL through AOL itself, others access it via Webmail (IE6). If both are running (open) at same time, could this present a problem?

    Thank you.

Re: 2 Browsers open simultaneously (IE6)

I assume that in saying "access AOL through AOL itself" you mean using AOL e-mail client software provided by AOL. If so, then that is accessing one's mail via a POP (post office protocol). I've not used AOL mail so I am guessing here. In doing this the user's computer requests and downloads the mail from the AOL server to a file on the user's computer. Using webmail, the mail resides on the AOL server and not on the user's computer. You can use both and the only issue I am aware of is that if the e-mail client requests and deletes mail from the server then you will have some mail on your computer and some on the AOL server and the webmail user may have missed the downloaded mail. One way to manage this is to set the option for the e-mail client to download mail BUT also leave a copy on the server.

I you are talking about using two different web browsers to access the mail (each using webmail) then I am not aware of a problem except for the human problem of one person deleting a mail before the other on reads it.

Paul, thank you for your response.

So, is it okay, do you think, to have BOTH browsers "open" (running) at the same time?

    Again, my thanks,
    Curious

Re: 2 Browsers open simultaneously (IE6)

I can't seen any problem with having multiple 'browsers' open simultaneously. It is no worse than having multiple IE windows (not tabs) open along with Firefox, Outlook, Skype, Windows Update etc., all connected to the internet at the same time (which I have been known to have!). Did you have any specific concerns?

Thank you for putting my mind at rest. No, no particular concerns - but knowing I don't know enough, I wanted to make sure I didn't run into problems.

Could you please clarify "tabs." Are you referring to the choices within, say a dialog box? I am not getting the distinction between "multiple IE windows (not tabs)..."

    Thank you, Leif

In Internet Explorer 7, you can open multiple websites in one instance of the browser, just like you can in FireFox. The open websites are displayed in tabs - see screenshot. In Internet Explorer 6, you open each website in a separate instance of the browser.

Re tabs: Prior to IE7, if you wanted multiple IE windows open you had to start additional instances of IE. IE7 now has tabs so that multiple websites can be opened within the same IE window.
