Duplicated Pictures (Vista Home premium)

This is not so much a problem as an annoyance. The attached is what options I get when looking at Backgrounds, Photos etc. all are the same photo however when selected they display (i guess) the correct photo. But why, originally it was not like this - I have added the program Screenthemes is this the culprit and if so why any fixes. Interestingly, when using Snip-It for the attachment the same default picture in the attacments is used by snip-it

Glen,

My first guess would be that Screenthemes is not compatible with Vista. I checked out the website and there is no mention whatsoever about supported O/S's. I would uninstall this application, reboot and see if that doesn't correct the problem. If it doesn't I would use System Restore to go back to a time/date just before you installed it and hope that your default thumbnails will once again be displayed.

Try going to Windows Photo Gallery and relax a minute or two, as you watch those identical photos become a collection of different photos.

You can make a desktop from any of the included samples, or any you may have added to the collection, and you can do it directly from Windows Photo Gallery.

I did what you suggested and nothing happens even after 10 minutes.

Did you try using the F5 key to refresh the listing. The images you have posted are the "Temp" one until a thumbnail is generated.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Re: Duplicated Pictures (Vista Home premium)

I may not have made it clear that I meant that you should run Windows Photo Gallery instead of backgrounds etc. It is a separate program that is included in Vista.

If you'd like the latest in photo management, Adobe Lightroom sells for a mere US $299 ($199 before April 30). If you'd like what may be the most popular free photo management program, try Picasa, which is from Google. I have used that in past and recommend it, but now that I have Vista I am trying out Windows Photo Gallery, since it occurred to me that it might integrate well with other Microsoft programs. There is an interesting description of it in Wikipedia.

None of that helps with the problem you are experiencing, which has me stumped. The one piece of advice I can give is that if you get Windows Photo Gallery to load at all, experiment with it and use it a certain amount, in more than one session, and I think you will find that it will become more responsive.

Thanks, had no trouble loading or using WPG - I will check all and see which suits. One feature Screenthemes gave me was the ability to auto change the photos on a daily basis and as I had quite a collection. WPG does not appear to let you download an image to import, but as this is early days I may be wrong about this.
Interestingly, I share this computer this my son and we both admin privileges to our logins (I was and am the original admin, created at set up) on his setup in backgrounds he can instantly see what is and should be there but I cannot....confused I am .

Which method are you talking about? Uninstall? System restore? Both? Remember that many times an uninstall does not revert registry changes.

Re: Duplicated Pictures (Vista Home premium)

Glen,

I do understand your problem since I remember that I had the very same problem immediately after I did my in place update installation of Vista over XP. The problem is simple enough to describe: the thumbnails for image files don't appear when using Windows Picture Gallery. What puzzles me is that you say this anomaly doesn't exist on your son's account but it does on yours. So, that must mean something has become corrupted or changed on your account specifically. Does this Screenthemes program function when you use your son's account? or was it installed as a "this user only" application? If the latter than it would definitely point the finger at Screenthemes. OR, it may be an option you enabled in that program or somewhere else.

I never did get an answer as to how to fix this problem on my system and ended up out of frustration re-installing Vista over itself which fixed the problem. After the re-install, which btw left everything "as is", i.e., I didn't have to reinstall any programs, no data was lost, etc., I simply deleted the two new folders that were created in "C:" that contain all the backup files from the previous installation, which amounted to about 8.3 gigs. hehe However, I am NOT recommending that course of action to you at this time. I have a feeling (not always dependable to be sure) that the problem is one that has to do with "file associations". There IS an answer/fix out there but the key is going to be able to find it. Not to demean or disparage the combined wisdom and knowledge that exists among the members of Woody's Lounge, I would suggest however, that perhaps if you were to post your problem on one of the Microsoft newsgroups you would succeed in finding the solution to this nagging issue.

You can view ALL the microsoft newsgroups here: Microsoft Discussion Groups Home.

Scrolling down the long list you will eventually get to the relevant Vista newsgroups, two of which might be most relevant are:

1. microsoft.public.windows.vista.general

2. microsoft.public.windows.vista.music_pictures_vide o

Hi Jeff,
Don't mean to hijack this thread, but your comment re."re-installing Vista over itself" has me intrigued. You say that nothing else was disturbed (applications, data, settings). I'm assuming that you did this as an "upgrade". Would you mind posting your exact procedure along with any other steps involved (such as reinstalling Windows updates, etc.)? Thanks.

Re: Duplicated Pictures (Vista Home premium)

John,

To be perfectly honest, I can't remember the details on how I did what I did. However, I believe that I booted with the Vista DVD and when prompted, I chose to do a "Repair" of the entire system. The installation went along like a new install, rebooted when completed and and that was that. There were two extra/new folders in the root, the names of which I also can't remember but they are quickly and easily recognizable and then can be deleted thereafter.

IF my original installation would have been pristine, then I would have created a True Image backup and used that should I had a need to restore the system. But since it wasn't and I didn't want to go through a clean install which would require several hours and invariably losing years of tweaks, etc.... you know what I mean, Vern? I chose to try the "Repair" feature which for me worked perfect. YMMV of course.

Re: Duplicated Pictures (Vista Home premium)

Guys - you have me totally confused, but I will not give up. So here is the latest, there is no Screenthemes - deletely from the system using Vista uninstall and rechecked 10 yes 10 times for any trace of Screentmemes... and guess what the system is still is not doing what it should - cannot use restore nothing in list suggests Screenthemes is there.... So I still cannot uses windows background or any other in the personalisations in the control panel- well not quite they are there but as per the originigal post....so nothing has changed. I am at a stage whereby a reinstallations may be best option, but in view of the conflicting opinion offer by those that know better ---- I AM JUST NOT SURE --- please help or advise.
