Using Power options (Win XP, SP2)

I need some info about the differences b/w "Stand by" and "Hibernation"......often when I put my computer into hibernation, it will reactivate itself when I remove it from the docking station (I am using a SONY Vaio VGN-SZ280P; 2 GB RAM).....I use Hibernation if I want to 'shut down' at home, go to work and re-start......my understanding is that in HIB mode, the hard drive is off (and therefore not likely to be damaged by moving the computer).....HIB doesn't seem to work very well (b/c of the 'reactivation' problem described above) and so I am thinking that I should just use Stand By.......in Stand By mode, does the hard drive turn off and is it safe to move a computer while in Stand By mode....?

    My understanding is:

Standby: the laptop powers down (HD's are off), RAM holds the current 'state of play'. Consumes power.
Hibernation: the laptop writes the current 'state of play' to HD and powers down. Consumes no power.

Returning from Standby is very fast because the information needed to get you back to where you were is already in memory. I would say either is a safe mode to transport in. However, check your power settings - after a certain amount of time in Standby you may automatically go into Hibernation to save power, and at a certain battery reserve level, you will almost certainly go into Hibernation, which will involve writing to the HD.

I don't know whether this will help or not, but on my HP dv5000 I press the power button quickly and the laptop goes into Stand-By. I just throw it in the bag and go. I have left it like that for 4 to 5 hours while driving and have plenty of battery left of course I do use the 12 cell Li-Ion battery. I have never seen the power drop below 85%, and have never had any problems. I does shut the HD down and pressing the power button quickly again brings up the log in screen quickly as well as any porgrams that were running when it goes into stand by. Great for going to a customers to do a presentation and not wait for everything to load.
    Thanks John
