Format changes from reset (Word 2003)

I used a "cleaning" program that reset a lot of things in Word. For example, my list of recent documents disappeared. So did the list of fonts that I used. One thing that I can't figure out is some new formatting activities. Previously, if I underlined something, the text was still formatted as NORMAL. But now, it is NORMAL + UNDERLINE or NORMAL + CENTER. I don't like this a bit. I have tried to fiddle with various options, but I can't figure out which option controls this. Anybody have any advice here?

    Thanks.

You always have to be careful with "cleaning" programs!

    Select Tools | Options...
    Activate the Edit tab.
Clear the check box labeled "Keep track of formatting".
    Click OK.

The pseudo styles based on formatting will disappear instantly.

Thank you. It worked. You are right about being careful with cleaning programs. But this one emptied my list of fonts, something I had been trying to do for a long time. I had asked here for help with that problem, but the advice that I got (which looked reasonable) didn't work.

    I am grateful to you.
