    Internet connection sharing...

I have a desktop that I've got wireless internet connection to. I'd like to share that connection via wire but haven't a clue how to get this internet connection sharing widget to work, and all sites I've found work on opposite premise; wired desktop sharing to wireless laptop... any tips?

    Re: Internet connection sharing...

I haven't done this, but I think it is as simple as finding the properties of the connection, going to the Advanced tab, and setting the checkbox marked "Allow other network users to connect...".

I think this may only work for dial up connections, so it would depend on how the driver for your wireless internet connection is designed.

This will need to be done using a wireless router. Who is the wireless provider?

The internet sharing widget is for DIAL UP only.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    Re: Internet connection sharing...

Dang. Good to know. It isn't a wireless provider...it's my wireless router. I could buy another wireless receiver, but I'd rather not, since the PC and laptop are located within 15' of each other.

Kind of a stupid idea though - internet connection sharing for dial up only? Dial up is near worthless nowadays anyways.

    Re: Internet connection sharing...

Give this a try. It's Proxy, from http://AnalogX.com. I used it a number of years ago now to share a dialup connection to AOL with many computers in my home network when I was without my regular broadband connection. It worked very well, and also allowed me to connect computers of various operating systems (Linux, Windows) via the one dial-up connection.

Note... you do not require anyone type of network connection.

All of the Wireless routers that I have seen have 4 Cat5 connections on the back side, are you sure that you do not have any?

What make amd model number do you have?

Then you need to get a Wireless card or run the cable to this computer.

How did you plan on connecting to this computer using "Internet sharing" if you did not want to buy a different NIC or run a cat5 cable?

If I understand the original post correctly, he is looking to share thru the wirelessly connected computer by a crossover cable connection between the RJ45 ports on each PC.

    Re: Internet connection sharing...

The Windows feature you need to do this is called "Routing and Remote Access" (RRAS) and I think it comes with Server versions of Windows only.

A quick google for "XP RRAS" turned up this article which suggests you can do what you want by setting HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesTcpip ParametersIPEnableRouter to a value of 1.

    I happen to have a version of Server <img src=/S/hmmn.gif border=0 alt=hmmn width=15 height=15>

I'll try the suggestions in the article first; thanks a lot!
