Updating Normal (2003)

We have one user of Word 2003 with this issue: Every time I open two documents in Word 2003 and then try to close one, I get a message that Word cannot update the Normal.dot because it is being used by another user.

We tried the suggestions from Microsoft. Does anyone have another solution?

Re: Updating Normal (2003)

Let the user try this:

- Quit all instances of Word.
- Select Start | Run...
- Type
winword /r

- Press OK or click Enter.

Does this make a difference?

Note: it isn't "normal" for Word to try to update Normal.dot each time. The user could take a look at Phil Rabichow's <!post=Systematic Approach to Behavioral Problems in Word,197827>Systematic Approach to Behavioral Problems in Word<!/post> to see if the culprit can be found.

I would also recommend ticking the check box "Prompt to save Normal.dot" in the General tab of Tools | Options...
This will make Word ask for confirmation before saving Normal.dot. Unless the user has intentionally changed something that is to be stored in Normal.dot. (s)he can answer No.
