Symbols Shortcut Keys (2003)

Hi,

I have a user who keeps on assigning shortcut keys to the Section Sign and Pilcrow Sign but they won't stick. I've done it for him myself to assure it was not user error and did it the following way:

1. Select Tools | Customize...
2. Click the Keyboard... button.
3. Select Normal.dot in the "Save changes in" dropdown list.
4. Click in the "Press new shortcut key" text box.
5. Press the desired shortcut key combination.
6. Click Assign to add the shortcut key to the list of Current keys.
7. Finally, click Close (twice)

I have also replaced his Normal.dot thinking it may be corrupted since none of the changes seem to stick. It will work for the current document but no new ones that he opens or old ones.

Any advice or insigth to this will help a lot.

Thanks

I miss two steps in your description: after 3. but before 4. you should first select a category from the list on the left, then a command from the list on the right. What do you select?

1) Another way to assign a keyboard shortcut to a symbol is through the Insert | Symbol dialog:
- Select Insert | Symbol.
- Locate and select the symbol you want.
- Click "Shortcut Key..."
- Press the desired keyboard shortcut.
- Click Assign.
- Click Close.

2) An add-in may interfere with storing customizations - do you have the Adobe Acrobat add-in installed?

I would be looking at what add-ins are running on that machine.

This sounds like the Acrobat add-in is active. Graham Mayor's website describes in great detail the resolution for Acrobat issues like this.

Sorry, I left it out. I choose Common Symbols than Section Sign and repeat for the Paragraph Sign. I also tried doing it through the Insert symbol and assigning the key there. I ended up giving him a copy of my Normal.dot which had them applied and it worked.

Thank you
