Search function on a a site

    Hi all,
I have created a website using an open source system. This system has got it own in build search engine and it needs some improvement. When doing a search it does to give the results unless you type in the correct word. it does not give suggestions if no results are found, for instance if someone makes a spelling mistake it does not suggest other words as google does, if you type in for instance the first three letters of the word the results are not displayed. Can some one please let me know how this search functionality could be imporved? I was thinking wildcards!!! If someone could just expalin how would one improve it I would really appreciate it.
    Many thanks,
    skips

I think the term you are looking for is Fuzzy Searching

Possibly the best thing to do is look up some Techical papers. Thi slinks shows you design concepts and ideas to improve search facilities on a web site

I don't think we can assist you further as "This system has got it own in build search engine and it needs some improvement" does not assist us in helping you point you in the right direction. What technology are you using? Has your College Tutor advised you? What are your end use requirements?

I have seen sites where a Google search has been added to a site- it is a site specific search. Perhaps there is an option to use that?

    Geoff,

I have done that. The option is available through the Google Adsense program. You can choose to search your site or all the web. They create the code and you add it to your page. Even I got it right!!

If I remember right, Skips is creating an intranet facility so I am not sure that your suggestion will work.......(of course it would for an internet site <img src=/S/yep.gif border=0 alt=yep width=15 height=15>)
