    small computer

I am interested in a small computer to remotely record data. I have a senor which will be deployed for anywhere from one week to one month. I currently have a Windows program that records the hex data from the sensor and writes out an ASCII file. Data comes in via serial cable. As this equipment will be in a water tight box in a buoy, a laptop is both too large and will probably draw too much power.

Basically the computer will be a one-trick pony:
    1. Read data over serial port
    2. Record data using windows program
    3. Periodically dump data to laptop (Bluetooth would be nice, but serial port to serial port will work fine, or write to flashcard of some kind)
    4. Memory requirements will be small. A check of the program size in Task Manager indicates 20,000k used and a day

You don't mention dimensions, but have you considered a Small Form Factor PC ?

Google SFF Computer. I found several at http://TigerDirect.Com

Right now, I'm trying to find out what's available and go from there. Will check it out your suggestion. Thanks.
Also, powerdraw would have to be a consideration

Can I ask what the data is? I don't know what power resources you will have, but I reckon you ideally need something that draws a lot less power than a laptop.

We are measure the flow of groundwater into lakes and streams. Currently the sensor and datalogger are being powered with a 12v battery. The datalogger draws 100 mA and the sensor 27mA. I am looking to replace the datalogger with a "computer"

So yes, something that draws a lot less than a laptop....

In this type application I would keep the computer in the lab and simply use a data logger in the field. As an example of what I mean check here http://www.anticyclone.myzen.co.uk/product_antilog.html

I am not sure if this is against the policies of this forum, so if it is please delete this reply!

Paul, SCADA applications are part of what I do for a living. If you would like please feel free to e-mail me so I can get a little better picture and see if we can come up with something for you outside the forum.
Just from what I have read so far though the datalogger approach may just be your best bet.
    Thanks John

    John,
It was previously pointed out to me that the Lounge has rule # 10 which says, in part, " Please keep your questions and answers on the open boards. We discourage sending or asking for replies via email or Private Message ." So I now point this out to you -this is sort of like the modern version of passing wisdom by oral tradition. <img src=/S/hushmouth.gif border=0 alt=hushmouth width=16 height=16>

    Re: small computer

Unless I'm mistaken, Paul isn't the one with the question, John. Just to add a bit to the comments (rule) about staying in the forum, some users get concerned when their thread get a little long, but we'd rather deal with that than have it taken "offline." If you stay here with the topic, everyone including future searchers can share in the steps the discussion goes through.

I'm off to do a Lounge search now, 'cause I think this topic of "data logging" from a remote location has been discussed in the past. Lemme go see...

    Paul and Al,
Thank you for the feedback about taking this offline. I can assure you that that will not happen again.
    Thanks John
