Bullets - Tab and Backspace (2003)

    Edited by HansV to insert <!t>[pre] and <!t>[/pre] tabs to preserve indentation

    This has been bothering me for years.
    to form a bullet or list I will usually type * or - followed by the sentence. For example

* This is the main topic

    Word will then create a bullet.
    When I press ENTER a new line will form with a bullet. If I hit tab, the bullet will be indented.
    Sometimes if I press tab and then backspace, the bullet will go back to the original level.
    For example

* Main line
    # second line after pressing tab
    * back to main line with a bullet after pressing enter, then tab, then backspace.

    However, other times, if I press tab then backspace the bullet will be deleted.
    For example:

* Main line
    # second line after pressing tab
    line with no bullet after pressing enter, then tab, then backspace.

    I cant figure out what causes this. Thanks!

    Re: Bullets - Tab and Backspace (2003)

    Welcome to Woody's Lounge!

    I don't know the exact cause, but it has to do with some AutoFormat As You Type settings in Tools | AutoCorrect Options...
    The "Automatic bulleted lists" check box causes * or - at the beginning of a paragraph to be converted to a bullet when you press Enter.
    The "Set left- and first-indent with tabs and backspaces" check box causes the Tab key to increase indentation and Backspace to decrease it.

    For me, the return to the left margin occurs if I press Enter twice at the end of a bulleted paragraph. The first Enter creates a new bulleted paragraph, the second Enter removes the bullet and the indent.

    Thanks Hans,

    That option is set in Tools | AutoCorrect Options...

    Pressing tab will increase the indentation... but backspace will delete the bullet rather than decrease it.
    Like I said earlier, it happens randomly, which is very frustrating.

    You might use Shift+Alt+left arrow to decrease the indent level and Shift+Alt+right arrow to increase the indent level. This should work more consistently.

    Alternatively, you could work in Outline view. The Promote / Demote buttons on the Outlining toolbar work for bulleted paragraphs too.
