USB device not recognized (Win XP Prof SR-2)

    Your INCIDENT ID is: 3700604

    Problem Description:
Windows XP Prof SR-2 (English), B6A01mux.exe, PIXMA iP1700. Initial installation on computer worked, but after a reboot, the USB message appeared: USB Device Not Recognized. USB port information is Unknown Device. Printer seems to be off line in Printer menu. After complete uninstall and re-install get same error, but now printer is not added to printermenu. Checked USB ports on computer with USB stick and all are working fine. Installed printer on identical computer and also here the initial installation was OK and after reboot problems started. Tried another cable and has the same problems.
Tried the printer on computer with Win XP Prof SR-2 at a supplier and there is worked, even after a reboot. What can I do?

These may seem like rather basic things to check but sometimes the basics are overlooked.

Did you go into the BIOS to see if USB ports are enabled?
Have you checked Device Manager to see if USB ports are recognized and without a "yellow flag"?
If you go into Control Panel and Printers and Faxes, do you see your printer listed there?
Try right clicking the printer, if it is there and uninstall it.
Click "Add a Printer" to create a new printer setup.
    Reboot.

You can also check troubleshoot printer problems while in the same location.

Re: USB device not recognized (Win XP Prof SR-2)

    Hi Bob,

    Thanks for your response:
USB ports are enabled (otherwise I should not be able to use other USB devices, such as Memory sticks)
No yellow flags at all in the Device Manager, but when I installed the printer it changed the USB port to which I connected the printer to Unknown Device.
Initially the printer was available in the printers screen, but when it did not work after a reboot (and several others), I uninstalled it and re-installed the printer drivers as described. Then the printer did no longer appear in the printers screen.
"Add a printer" should not be done for USB printers according to the documentation. Anyway, it will not set up the correct port.
    Rebooting - well 60-80 times.....
Troubleshoot printer problems from the printers screen was one of the first things I did after the initial installation, reboot and consequent printing problem, but no help there.

Did you install the software first?

    Hi Joe,

    Thanks for your reply.

I installed the software first (as "recommended" on the instruction sheet). At the moment you have installed the software, it tells you to connect the printer to the mains and the USB port (in that order) and the printer should be recognized.... but........

    Greetings

Re: USB device not recognized (Win XP Prof SR-2)

    Hi,

Went through Joe's links and found some interesting reading. Did not help though, but then I had an idea and it worked.......
The idea: Switch computer and printer off. Switch on printer and wait till it is ready. Start computer and...... printer is recognized. Weird, but it seems to be working (for now).

    Thanks!
