Change of holiday, but not in the Lounge

The Lounge has for quite some time given attention to different national or international holidays, in that the different countries' flags are shown at the top of each page (or if one restrain that, a short message about the holiday).

Last year, and previously, if I remember correct, on 6 June the Swedish flag was shown together with a comment that it was the "Swedish Flag Day". That was correct before 1983, but since then 6 June is our National Day.

So with this year's forthcoming National Day in mind I thought it could be a good idea to mention it to our admins or Claude et al. Not that it is really important, but if mentioned it should be correct.

Or if one trust or like to search, one can look at CIA's The World Factbook.

Ah well, today we're* supposed to celebrate Europe Day. Vive l'Europe!

*I.e. we the members of the EU.

Thanks for the update. I shall point Claude towards this and hopefully he'll find time before then to fix it!

BTW - I would have thought someone could have run an iron quickly over the flag on your link - it looks a bit wrinkled...

(And Happy Europe Day to you )

Yeah, yeah, but that's now. Do come back to that link on 6 June, and you will find a nice, smooth flag.

Looks fine. As long as the yellow is NCS 0580-Y10R and the blue is NCS 4055-R95B; and height proportions are 4/2/4 and length proportions are 5/2/9 (10:16), I'm fine.

Well thanks for this Argus, this thread had set me off on a frenzy of wikipediing (I think I can use that word...but I shall claim it before the Lounge pedant steps in )

I never knew that Sweden was a Kingdom....until now

I know you know this but here is a List of Swedish Monarchs for other Loungers to see. Thanks

Jerry,
"I never knew that Sweden was a Kingdom....until now"
What do you know?

Our King's aunt is the mother to the Queen of Denmark. Oscar II's, (great-great grandfather to the King), grandchild Astrid, Princess of Sweden, later became Queen consort of Belgium. I could go on. And if you like, include GB; our King's grandmother Margaret (Princess Margaret of Connaught) was the daughter of the Duke of Connaught and Strathearn and son to Queen Victoria.

Our Kingdom was a great power in the 17th century, (among other links Thirty Years' War. "... never knew that Sweden was a Kingdom ...".

As to this Wikipedia thingies, the list shows the lesser coat of arms, used by the government, and may of course be used when describing the politics and government, but when it comes to monarchs and the country, the greater coat of arms is the official.

Well I knew it had a King just never thought of it as Kingdom (although by pure definition it is). I have never really been up on my history, let alone my European history. Mrs J tuts at me when I say things like I said in the message above....but then I tut at her with some of the things she says about computers.

Argus,
Thanks for some history on my ancestral homeland!
Swedish on my paternal side, Norwegian on my maternal side. ( not a common combination, I'm told? )

Long ago, there was a time when men cursed and beat on the ground with sticks. It was called witchcraft.
Today it is called golf!
