    Special symbols (Word 2003)

    Hello,

    Does anyone know how to make o's and u's with the two dots (umlocks?) on top in Microsoft Word 2003?

    Thank you,

    JMT

    If you look within Windows Character Map, you can find the keystrokes for these (and other) characters.

    The superscripted double-dots are umlauts!

    Yet another way is to ensure that your NumLock light is lit then <UL><LI>hold down the Alt key, type 132 (or 0228), then release the Alt key to get [b]

    Here is a way to use many "international" characters in Word:

    The + sign between keys means those two or three keys must be pressed at the same time.

    Re: Special symbols (Word 2003)

    I have a similar question, but perhaps this is not the correct place to ask it. I need to create a symbol that looks like the copyright or trademark symbols, the c or T inside a circle or letter O. Only instead of the C or T, I need the letter M. With the old but unsurpassable Word Perfect it was possible to create these overlapping characters and there was even a special name for this. But I do not know what to call these characters so I cannot do a Google either. Any suggestions?

    You can use the { ADVANCE } field code to overlap characters, here is an example of an O and an M overlapping.

    Another possibility is the EQ field - see attached document. The field code for the field you see in the document is <code>EQ O(O,M)</code>. I decreased the font size of the M and raised it by 2 points.

    Is there a way to do this in Excel as well?

    Re: Special symbols (Word 2003)

    After using ADVANCE, how do you turn it off? For example, if I want to write an equation where I'm questioning the equality, I might write:

    2x + 5 = {advance u 12 l 8}? but, now I want to write "normally" after the =?

    For example by inserting another ADVANCE field after the question mark, but before the text that should follow the equals sign.

    { advance d 12 r 8 }
