Determine 'Update' running at shutdown (XP sp2)

    Greetings,
When I am doing a shutdown, I get a message to NOT turn off the computer, as an update is running. However it seems to not load. How do I determine what is attempting to update, and then stop it?

    Regards,
    Brad

Is there any other information in the message besides that "an update" is running?

Can you get a screenshot of it?

Does Task Manager show anything running? ( Ctrl+Alt+Del )

    Bob,
It is beyond the "windows" area, it is at the point where Windows normally shuts down that the message appears. All it indiactes is that updates are installing. In this case 1 of 1.

What I need to do, is see what WILL update as windows shuts down. Would this appear in running processes prior to shutdown?

    Thanks,
    Brad

    Brad,

I'm really not sure if it would show or not but it's worth a look. If you catch it right, it might give you an idea as to what programs could possibly be set to check for auto updates or not.

What are your automatic update settings?

I would turn off Windows auto updates, at least for the duration of this investigation. Further to what Bob said, you might want to look at MSCONFIG (not the best, but it is the easiest) for a total list of what's running all the time. It might give you (and us!) a clue of what you have running that is looking for updates at shutdown time. It would be easy enough to un-check one or more and start a shutdown test, repeating as necessary, to see if you can catch the culprit.

    Thanks!

I will take that approach to see what happens....

See the note at the bottom of How does Automatic Updates work? for information about installing updates when Windows shuts down.
