    System Restore (Win XP SP2)

Somehow I've lost functionality. When I started System Restore this morning I received a notice that said "Restore Point Creation Failed!"
I tried to restore to a previous date and the Next button didn't work. I found an article on the web that said System Restore (restorpt.api) is a new Windows XP feature. Searched for restorpt.api and it wasn't found. I found no Services errors.

In the registry I found for System Restore: HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsNTCurrent Version:
DisableSR with a value data of 0
RestoreDiskSpaceError with a value of 0
Restore SafeModStatus with a value of 0
Restore Status with a value of 2 (what does the 2 indicate)?
CreateFirstRunRp with a value of 1

I need help and will try all suggestions for a fix, except Format Windows.

    Gloria,
That reg should continue to the place you indicated but also be at System Restore. Below is copy of my reg at that place.

Re: System Restore (Win XP SP2)

When you started the application System Restore (SR) did you really get a "notice" that said "Restore Point Creation Failed!"?

Did you get an error message when you started SR or when you tried to create a restore point, and what was the exact error message?

A solution to your problem (any problem) is dependent on information about what happened. It could be that you would have to re-register some files or reinstall SR etc. etc.

Re: System Restore (Win XP SP2)

The options I see for each one on both of our lists is: Modify, Modify Binery Data, Delete and Rename. I can not find the Reg_Word.
I can send you the information I see when I click Modify (Edit DWord Value).

Where do I go to find Reg_Word?

Re: System Restore (Win XP SP2)

I chose create a restore point,. then typed a description for the restore point, clicked the create button and the error message appeared.

System Restore is not able to create a restore point, Please restart the computer, and then run SR again.

Restarting did not change the message and SR is still unavailable. I also can not restore to a previous date.

There is a MSKB article on SR values in the reg, with details at: 295659

<big>JUST BE CAREFUL </big> changing anything in here!

Also a FAQ on SR is at System Restore FAQ

Re: System Restore (Win XP SP2)

    Oh, that is an error message that can be found in at least two situations;
-Windows ME, a Wininit.ini file in Windows folder.
-Windows XP, HighPoint RAID controller type HPT370, HPT370A, or HPT372 are installed, and version 2.30, 2.31 not digitally signed.

Typically old problems since either the OS is not in use or the drivers to the other OS is updated.

Before your upgrade to SP2 you at some occasions had problems with SR and other OS applications. The SP upgrade would have been a great occasion to do a clean install to ensure a stable platform for future use. I do not say that you need to do a clean install, just that the status of the PC isn't clear to me.

Since manually creating Restore Points (RP's) is something you do every now and then, only you can answer if anything has changed since it (SR) last worked (creating RP).

What do you see in Event Viewer > System, related to Source "srservice" and "sr"?

Do you run any Norton product on the PC?

Is SR only monitoring the system partition? I.e. if you have more than one partition or drive in the PC, is SR monitoring several?

It could be that the log is corrupt, a log that keeps track of the RP's.

One early test could be to turn off SR, reboot and turn on. It is true that turning off SR will remove every RP. However, that is nothing to loose since they are not working anyhow. But it would probably come back.

Another solution is to reinstall SR.

Oh, and it is REG_DWORD, not Reg_Word, it is a type of registry value. The column in the screen shot only tells what type of value it is, I would be stunned if your values were not of the correct type (although might be set to different).

As Bob said be careful. Quote MS:
"However, in this key, there are some values that must not be modified under any circumstances."

But I don't think changing values in the registry will help you.

I appreciate the links, but what I really would like to see is something saying How To Install System Restore. I've tried so many things and nothing works. Can you find the information I requested above? I've tried to find it myself but couldn't.

Re: System Restore (Win XP SP2)

You obviously think I am more knowledgable about computers than I really am. What are where if HighPoint RAID controller? It's not on my computer. I'm really glad you're not suggesting that I do a clean install, that is out of the question.

Manually creating Restore Points is NOT something I do occassionally, I do it each and every day that this computer is running. I would no more think of not using it than I would not think of using Windows XP.

I've checked Event Viewer and did not find any mention of srservice nor sr. I did turn off SR on my D drive shortly before the error was generated. I will remove SR, restart computer and turn it back on, this time enabling my second drive.. What is the name of the log, I've never seen one for SR?

You mentioned reinstall of SR but you failed to tell me where to find the install file. That is the main thing I need to know, also if I should remove my copy of SR first and how to do that.

Will someone PLEASE tell me how to reinstall SR.

Check out http://ask-leo.com/how_do_i_get_at_system_...windows_xp.html and try the steps in running SR using the "c:windowssystem32restorerstrui.exe" file.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Re: System Restore (Win XP SP2)

    Dear Argus,
I turned off SR on all drives, a message appeared "You have chosen to turn off SR. If you continue, all existing restore points will be deleted, and you will not be able to track or undo changes to your computer. Do you want to turn off SR? I clicked Yes and restarted the computer. Went back and removed the check to turn SR off on all drives. I did NOT restart this time. Then I tried to create a restore point and the same error message appeared. So that option failed. There is nothing left to do but reinstall.

Re: System Restore (Win XP SP2)

    Gloria,
I've been quite busy today, and since I wasn't exactly sure about the cause of your problems, I, by purpose, left out the description of SR reinstall, since we don't want to rush things. But instructions are easy to find.

Forget about HighPoint RAID, I just mentioned the two most common causes for that error message during the life of SR, but as I said it can be other causes.

First, in your reply to Bob you mentioned your earlier request. What would that be, I explained in my reply to you what a REG_DWORD value type is. So forget registry, your values look fine, the "2", status, is as mentioned in Bob's link an interrupted restore operation, you already knew that.

OK, after your last off, reboot, turn on, I think you could have tried a reboot. But still I'm with you, I don't think the first step would solve it.

Anyhow, I was almost sure you would do a search for SR reinstall yourself, and it is quite easy to find instructions.

I have my places, but second on Goggle (tm) is:
How to reinstall System Restore in Windows XP?
    http://windowsxp.mvps.org/repairsr.htm

In this case, a part of the OS, one can use the *.inf files to run the install. It could be that one will be prompted for some source files. However, since I think I know you have copied OS CD to hard disk, it could be that in your case you have to, IF asked, point it to hard disk.

Now, it is essential most of the times to point it to where the latest files are. In your case you are on SP2, but I don't know where you have those. I have no problem, myself, since I have a slipstreamed OS CD with XP SP2. Where you have your files: I don't know.

So basically it is the sr.inf file that reinstalls SR. See link above. There can be a new, different error message when reinstalled, but not everyone get that, so let's skip that for now.

Re: System Restore (Win XP SP2)

    Gloria,
Why didn't you reboot? I think you should.

Also did you read the troubleshooting steps outlined in my second link. ( FAQs ) In particular the ones mentioned, how to enable and disable SR?
How to verify if SR is running?
Why are previous SR points not working?
What to do if SR is not working?
    How about doing SFC /scannow?

( enabling and disabling SR is really installing and uninstalling it )

Re: System Restore (Win XP SP2)

It didn't work Dave. The first problem was to not type the quotation marks which the article did not tell you not to do. When windows couldn't find the file, I finally had sense enough to type without the quotes. SR appeared and there were no restore points available. so I tried to create a SR point, the error message appeared again. I'm tried of trying to fix this durn thing, let's just toss it out with the trash and start from the top.

Re: System Restore (Win XP SP2)

OK, I rebooted and it didn't help. I'll run SFC another day, I'm so tired of messing with SR. I'm almost tempted to do without it, much as I hate to.
