Multiple Folder Opening (XP)

One of my Excel students asked me to try and find out how he can:

Open more than one folder at a time without, obviously, opening them one at a time. He specified he would like for this mutliple-opening to occur when he is assigning paths for .mp3 files, for example - he has all his music in folders by category, I guess.

Anyway - any help you can give me to share with him will be greatly appreciated.

In what program does your Excel student want to open multiple folders, and what does he actually want to happen as a result?

I'm assuming (he is from Mexico and communicates in English with some difficulty) he wants to go to his My Music folder wherein he has many different folders (for example, Jazz, Latin, Rock, etc) into which he wants to download or copy music files - he wants to have ALL of them open with one command - at least, that's what I think I heard him say.

???????? So what do you think?

PS I was just speaking to friend who is originally from a small town near Durham and who was residing in Derbyshire when she left England to come here with her husband to open a business - she'd give anything to have not made that decision now - but here she is.

Anyway - thanks for replying so quickly - any help will be appreciated.

I'm not sure this will quite do what he wants, but if you're in Windows Explorer and click on the folder whose subfolders you want to expand, you should make sure that the NumLock light is lit then press the </big>*</big> key on the numeric keypad.

PS This can cause problems if you have a huge number of folders that need to be expanded - my attempts come up with a Windows Live signon screen after a fair amount of expansion!

The * key on the numeric keypad works for me to expand all subfolders of the selected folder whether Num Lock is on or off.

If I select multiple folders in the right hand pane in Explorer, using shift click or control click, and then right click on one of them and choose Open, it seems to do what you want.

If your student wants to expand *all* subfolders, John's suggestion of using the * key on the numeric keypad is the way to go.
If he wants to open a number of folders in separate windows, he can select the folders using any of the standard methods (dragging a rectangle around them, or click then Shift+click, or Ctrl+clicking individual folders) in Windows Explorer, then press Enter or select File | Open.

Hi Hans,
Seems you and Stuart gave good examples, separate Windows.

Since it is mentioned in this thread, the *, to expand all subfolders, I thought one could also mention as I did in this <post:=607,142>post 607,142</post:>; by using Alt-* you expand all entries under your selection, one level in each branch at a time, each time you use it. Can be useful if one know there are a lot of folders and want to move in steps.

I believe this bit of code came from the Lounge somewhere but has been really useful for me to list my cofiguration files for my work and can be used perfectly for listing music and sub-folders on an Excel spreadsheet
