Windows Desktop Search (XP SP2 - WDS 3.0)

According to Microsoft, you can retain the Desktop Search Toolbar, but stop WDS taking over the Search in Explorer or the Start menu.
MS provides an .ADM file for doung this via gpedit or you ca n hack the registry directly either:
    HKLMSoftware Microsoft Windows Desktop SearchDS
    DWORD DisableReplacingStartSearch = 1

Or a similar thing at HKLMSoftwarePoliciesWindows Desktop Search

I can't get either to work. Explorer and the Start Menu still both come up
with WDS after a restart, and I need to hit the 'Use Search companion' link to search for non-indexed files.

Anyone got this to work? It would be nice to get the best of both worlds

I can not find that registry key (or a policy) in either Download details: WDS 3.01 Administration Guide or MSN Search Toolbar Administration Guide. Where did you find it?

(Edited by HansV to make URL clickable - see <!help=19>Help 19<!/help>)

It's in the desktopsearch.adm template and also here:

Those settings are for WDS 2.6.5. See page 32 of the WDS 3.01 admin guide:

"The policy structure between WDS 3.01 and WDS 2.66 are different. To manage an environment that has both WDS 3.01 and WDS 2.66 you will need to use both ADM templates. The WDS 2.66 policies do not apply to 3.01 or vice versa. This is because there was a major architecture change between these two versions."

Ah yes - that would do it. The option no longer exists in 3.01. I shall stop digging.
    Many thanks, Joe

You are welcome. FWIW, I think MS has tried to make the XP search functionality & UI more like the Vista search.
