    Sleep Mode (Vista Ultimate)

Something is preventing my computer from going to sleep. Even if I press the sleep button or use the Start button sleep option, the computer shuts down but immediately restarts.

What should I be looking for (and how do I find it)? Is there any other diagnostic information that I can provide?

    Cheers,
    Regards,

Do you have any shared drives or devices?
Is this a desktop or laptop?
What software including music and movie downloading software are you running?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    Hi Dave,

My computer is a desktop. If you are asking if I share drives or devices with other computers over a network, the answer is no, at least not knowingly. Right now I use the machine mainly for Internet browsing and email (Firefox and Thunderbird) and for Photoshop Elements work. I don't run any music or movie downloading SW on this machine. Task Manager shows no applications running when I expect the computer to sleep, although there are many processes and services running. I can't identify most of these and whether or not they are contributing to the problem.

    Cheers,
    Regards,

Some wireless mice and keyboards may keep a system from going to sleep. Along this same line, some network cards and/or driver may also keep a machine awake.

    What USB devices are connected?

    Dave,

Good point. In my experience this problem can often be caused if a wireless mouse is used where the receiver is a USB dongle (looks like a Memory Stick/Thumb Drive). The radio signal is interpreted as "activity" which can not only prevent Sleep Mode from kicking in but also the screensaver from working as well.

Thanks for your interest in this problem. I have decided that as there are so many things that are wonckey with my Vista installation, I am going to restore it to OOB status and document/test all changes to see where I may be going wrong.

    Cheers,
